Motherwort is a wonderful ally for anxiety, especially when heart palpitations or tightness in the chest are present. This supportive herb is a cardiac nervine, calming and strengthening the heart and vasculature. The action of relaxing the vasculature helps to lower blood pressure and can help to lower a fever. Motherwort also soothes and strengthens the emotional heart, allowing us to soften into our hearts and express from our true selves rather than reacting from stress; it does this by strengthening the parasympathetic nervous system (the branch of the autonomic nervous system that helps us to feel calm and relaxed). The Latin name for Motherwort is Leonurus cardiaca, which means “lion-hearted;” when we express from our heart/our true selves, rather than reacting to the world around us, there is a steady confidence that arises.
This plant is a very effective emmenagogue and is used for amenorrhea (lack of me**es). It can bring on me**es rather quickly; I recommend avoiding taking Motherwort during me**es if you are prone to heavier bleeding, as it will make it even heavier, but if you have scant bleeding, especially with tension in the uterus, Motherwort can relax the uterus and move the blood.
This plant is VERY bitter, so I do not recommend drinking it as a tea! Tincture is my preferred way of taking Motherwort.

The healing process begins when we share our stories in a safe, nonjudgemental space, with someone who listens deeply and truly cares. Our nervous systems can relax and we can soften into our bodies when we are witnessed in this way, and there is trust built between us and our practitioner. This is why I allow 2 full hours for initial herbal consultations, which I am now offering on a sliding scale fee. I obtain a full health history and dive deep into each symptom you’re experiencing to get a clear picture of your current state of health, which allows me to better choose herbs that are a good fit for you. If you want to support your health with herbs but aren’t sure where to start, book a consultation with me and I will create a custom herbal formula for your unique needs. "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." - Hippocrates Did you know that culinary herbs are medicinal? While each plant has several actions and uses, I'll simplify a few here:
Rosemary - a warming circulatory stimulant and nootropic (improves memory/cognitive function by increasing blood flow to the brain)
Thyme - warming, stimulant expectorant/antimicrobial (great for "wet" coughs, in which you hear/feel lots of mucus ; thyme will help break up and expectorate the mucus while also fighting pathogens that may be present
Sage - astringent properties make it great for a sore throat, helps to decrease milk supply for weaning (may want to avoid in higher amounts while breastfeeding to avoid this dip in milk supply), and sage is a wonderful ally for women transitioning into their sage era by decreasing frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats
Turmeric - a wonderful inflammation-modulating herb, supports healthy liver function and digestion, nootropic (supports cognitive function) via increasing blood supply to brain, can assist with blood sugar balance & insulin sensitivity
Cinnamon - also helps with blood sugar balance/insulin sensitivity, one of the few herbs that is both warming AND moistening (most herbs are drying), making it beneficial for those with a cold, dry constitution
Ginger - warming circulatory stimulant, very helpful for nausea, inflammation-modulating, carminative (supports healthy digestion and decreases gas/bloating)
Fennel - one of my favorite go-to carminative herbs to relieve gas/bloating in the GI tract I could go on, but I'll stop here to keep this post simple! Hi! Do you want to support your health with herbs but don't know where to start? Have you tried taking herbs in the past but they didn't work? Maybe you heard that a plant is good for a cough or headache and you tried it, but it actually made it worse? For instance, elecampane and mullein are both great for the lungs and for coughs, but are used for very different types of coughs. If you have a wet-sounding cough with excess mucus, elecampane is great for breaking up that mucus and helping to expectorate it. It's a warming, stimulant expectorant, and while it's great for cold, wet, boggy coughs, it can aggravate a hot, dry, spasmodic cough. That's where mullein shines, moistening, soothing & relaxing those dry, irritated, spasming tissues and offering relief.
If you are interested in diving deeper into using herbs to assist you on your health journey, I am a trained clinical herbalist and would love to support you. I create custom herbal formulas, along with simple dietary and lifestyle suggestions, and for the month of January, I'm offering 20% off your initial herbal consultation.
