🏆 1930. The first ever World Cup.
The USA's debut tournament.
And their best result in history.
Third place. A record that has stood for 96 years and has never been matched.
Let's go back to Uruguay in July 1930 and tell the full story — because it deserves it.
Thirteen nations. No qualification process. FIFA had invited every member nation and thirteen showed up, most Europeans declining to make the long sea voyage across the Atlantic. The USA made it, sailing to Montevideo as one of the tournament's more respected sides — the New York Times named them pre-tournament favourites.
The squad were largely players of Scottish, English and Irish immigrant descent, competing in the American Soccer League. Semi-professional by modern standards. Formidable by the standards of 1930.
Their first match? The opening day of the very first World Cup. The first two games kicked off simultaneously on July 13, 1930. France beat Mexico 4-1. And the USA beat Belgium 3-0, with goalkeeper Jimmy Douglas posting the first clean sheet in World Cup history.
Then came Paraguay. The USA won 3-0 again — and Bert Patenaude of Fall River, Massachusetts, scored three of those goals. The first hat-trick in World Cup history, though FIFA would take 76 years to officially confirm it.
Two wins. Six goals scored. None conceded. Group winners. Semi-finals.
Then Argentina. The Americans had a player break his leg in the 19th minute. No substitutions allowed. Ten men. The trainer ran on to help another injured player, dropped a bottle of chloroform from his bag, inhaled the fumes, and had to be stretchered off himself. Argentina won 6-1.
No third-place match was played in 1930. FIFA later awarded the USA third place based on their superior tournament record over Yugoslavia. The only non-European or South American team to ever finish on the World Cup podium. In the sport's very first tournament.
96 years later, that peak hasn't been touched.
