Today, our team received a Turtle Award from for "sticking our necks out" in our community. It was such an honor and a privilege to share the award stage with several other truly incredible and inspiring community members who work tirelessly to make the community and world a better place! Thank you for being you!!
At the very base of what we do, we believe healthcare is a human right and that everyone deserves care regardless of housing or substance use status or any other label society has placed on someone.
When we think of the turtle: slow and steady wins the race, and in our work, slow and steady wins the trust. We are consistent, and we take our time, moving only ever at the speed of trust.
We are willing to work within and shine a light on some of the uglier, more shadowy aspects of our society: the postpartum mom sent to live back in her car after a cesarean, the person sleeping on the sidewalk in need of hip surgery, the young person recently aged out of foster care without support, the person thrown into labor due to a sweep, people struggling with substance use, navigating family policing systems, medical issues they cannot afford..the list goes on.
We see the human in front of us, and we care.
We help when no one else will. We take risks, placing ourselves in situations and locations most people either pretend don't exist or would never go.
We do all this because of the belief that a better world is possible, and we see the value in supporting our most vulnerable community members as a way to create a healthier community overall.
It should not be radical to consider that ALL members of our community are worthy of care.
City Club of Eugene thank you so much for this award♡
