Low Carb Eating Leonette

Low Carb Eating Leonette Looking for anyone interested in or practicing the low carb lifestyle. Especially if you live in the Eugene area. Low carb since 2020.

Born in Hawaii in 1952, moved to Eugene in 1975. Ate according to the food pyramid for the first 68 years of my life. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. I lived in Orange, California, from 1970 to 1972. I lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from 1972 to 1974. I lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from June 1974 to March 1975. I moved to Eugene, Oregon in August 1975, and felt at home here from the first day.

Doctors are noticing a disturbing trend: their younger patients, the ones in their 20s and 30s, are getting cancer in increasing numbers. People say "It must be the environment." But if that is so, why aren't older people also getting cancer in increasing numbers? Very few doctors look at their patients' eating habits. One doctor who did found that the patient was vegetarian. The doctor dismissed this as the cause for the patient's cancer because the mainstream belief is that vegetarianism is healthy. Vegetarianism among the population is increasing, especially among younger people. Health professionals are not making a possible connection between vegetarianism and cancer, and that is a tragedy.

What are you going to do when your primary care physician retires? If you're one of the lucky ones whose P*P is still young, you don't have to worry. What about the rest of us?

I never used to have trouble getting a P*P. When I had a long running fever back in 1979, I went to the nearest doctor's office without calling in first, and was immediately accepted and treated. The doctor gave me a shot of penicillin and my fever went down the same day. That doctor became my P*P for the next 8 years. Then I moved, and immediately found another P*P close to where I lived. This doctor treated me for the next 30 years. Then she retired and a new P*P in the same clinic took over, and all the former P*P's patients were automatically transferred to the new one. A couple of years ago that P*P died, and no new P*P took his place. My clinic has fewer P*Ps than before, and none of them except pediatricians are accepting new patients.

Health professionals distrust the carnivore diet because no meta studies have been done on it. On the other hand, a meta study using the entire American population has been going on for the last 50 years. This study is on the nutritional guidelines of low fat, lots of whole grains, little meat, and plenty of fiber. What are the results? Runaway obesity and diabetes. Everyone who follows the current nutritional guidelines has a good chance of getting sick!!!! Please pay attention to your body and eat the foods that make it well.

Dave and I often say to each other "We're having too much fun." We are having a lot of fun, almost every day. We also say to each other "This is the life." These are the reasons why. We're retired. We live in a beautiful city and state. We're in good health because we eat carnivore.

We've been told that in order to lose weight we must eat fewer calories and exercise more. It was different for me. When I started eating low carb, my calorie intake rose. My exercise level stayed the same. And I LOST WEIGHT!

If you believe that Mediterranean and plant-based diets are healthy, ask yourself these further questions. Do you wake up every day filled with joy? Have you lost excess weight without pain or struggling, and kept it off? Are your pants regular size? Do you get out of bed, off of a chair, walk on hard floors, without pain? Have your allergies gone away? Have your acne and other skin conditions cleared up? Do you rarely get sick (including covid) and when you do, it's mild? Have you sat in the sun for hours without sunblock and not get sunburn? Has your brain fog cleared up? When you wake up in the morning do you enjoy planning activities, both chores and fun? Do you enjoy getting together with friends and meeting new people? Greet strangers on the street and at the supermarket, and engage in friendly conversations? Have you reconnected with classmates and family members? Are you adventurous? Enjoy coordinating dishes for holidays and large gatherings, potlucks, daily meals? When eating out do you go for bunless burgers, steak, bacon, eggs? Do you snack on pork rinds, bacon bites, high fat and low carb dip? Enjoy eating fatty meat and butter without worrying about their effects on your health? In fact noticing that they IMPROVE your health? Have you reversed your arthritis and no longer need pain medication? Experienced an end to melancholy and anger?
These conditions and behaviors occurred with me after I started eating low-carb.

If you believe that a Mediterranean or plant-based diet is healthy, ask yourself these questions. Do you have low energy? Are you overweight, been gaining weight over the years? Are your pants "plus" size? Do you have osteoporosis, arthritis, hay fever, irritable bowel syndrome, acne? Do you crave desserts and anything sweet? Are bread, pasta, potatoes, chocolate, ice cream your comfort foods? Do you get sunburned unless you use sunblock? Constipation unless you eat a lot of fiber? Pain walking down stairs, standing up after sitting awhile, getting out of bed in the morning? Do you wear cushioned footwear because your feet hurt when walking on hard floors? Do you shy away from strangers? Have you pretty much lost connection with classmates and family? Do you often feel irritated, melancholy, angry? Do you have brain fog? Catch colds easily? Feel overwhelmed with coordinating dishes on holidays, potlucks, everyday balanced meals? Or with the chores for the day, or at the prospect of taking a trip? Are you cautious? Do you eat chicken breasts, turkey bacon, lean meat, margarine, vegetable oil, soy products, plant-based meat substitutes? When you don't feel like cooking do you snack on crackers, corn chips, potato chips, low fat dips? Do you take prescription and OTC meds for many ailments? Painkillers frequently?
I had all these conditions and behaviors before starting to eat carnivore.

The various ways of eating are not at war with each other. They are different people's attempts to find the optimum health. Some people of one persuasion harbor great anger at people of other persuasions. The angry people have some justification; mega chicken and cattle companies treat their animals horrendously.
However, many other chicken farmers and cattle ranchers raise their animals in wholesome conditions--free range chickens, grass fed cattle. Regenerative farming is heaven for the animals.

Yesterday I had a "meat-up" with some members of the PNW Carnivore group, those living in the Eugene area. We had a great time. For me it was a dream come true to meet in person with other women who are going low-carb.

A little over a year ago an article about the carnivore diet, written by Manvir Singh, was published in the New Yorker magazine. The article began by describing an extreme carnivore dieter who boasted about eating raw liver and raw eggs (if I remember correctly). This person is no way representative of carnivore dieters. Then the article mentioned Judy Cho (youtube channel nutritionwithJudy), who has written a book about the benefits of eating carnivore. The article did not mention the writings or videos of other carnivore proponents, such as Ken Berry, Amber O'Hearn, Anthony Chaffee, Michaela Peterson, and many others. Surely while doing the research for the article, Singh came across these proponents, yet he chose to ignore them. The general tone of the article was that this was a fad diet with questionable merit.

The next month a letter to the editor was printed citing the article, and focusing on the idea of self image in women. The letter declared that it is wrong for society to base women's attractiveness on their weight.

Both the article and the letter missed the point that being overweight is an unhealthy condition. I felt that Singh was remiss as a journalist. He discouraged readers from trying a carnivore diet, thus depriving them of a chance to overcome ill health.

The New Yorker is a respected publication (see attached comic strip). I admire many of the magazine's articles. But I consider their carnivore diet article to be harmful to its readers.
