Well… apparently “planting in new soil” wasn't the whole story. 😂

A few weeks ago I told y'all that we'd traded Alaska for the mountains of Idaho and that Frozen Herbalist was coming with me.

What I didn't really tell you was what the months leading up to that move looked like.

Our Alaska home suffered major water damage. What followed was months of watching rooms get torn apart, our belongings packed into conexes, hotel living, camper living, uncertainty, and eventually packing up our family and heading for Idaho.

It has been one hell of a season.

But somewhere in the middle of all of it, I started writing.

Not herbs this time.

Songs. 😂

Songs about faith, marriage, working men, hard years, starting over, and the people who become home when everything else gets stripped away.

One of them was for Matt.

I called it Finding Home in You.

When I played it for him, he told me other people needed to hear it.

So I did something completely outside my normal wheelhouse...

I created Thistle & Steel.

Hard rock. Outlaw country. Pedal steel. Big cinematic strings. And real stories underneath all of it.

Our first single, Finding Home in You, releases September 7.

Home was never where we lived.
It was never wood or stone.

If I'm building it with you,
I'm already home.

Different mountains. Different ground. Same roots.

Stay rooted,
Momma J

A little Frozen Herbalist update. Life has taken our family somewhere I did not expect. We have officially traded Alaska for the mountains of Idaho. Right now, we are working toward a new place to call home. A little land, room for a garden, animals, herbs, and hopefully a place where I can get my hands back in the dirt and build the kind of homestead we love. I wondered for a minute if “Frozen Herbalist” still fit now that we have left Alaska. I decided it does. Alaska is where so much of this began. It taught me to grow in a short season, preserve what we had, use what God provided, and make do when the store was not right around the corner. Those lessons came to Idaho with me. So Frozen Herbalist is not going anywhere. We are simply planting it in new soil. Different mountains, different ground, same roots.
Stay rooted,
Momma J

Don't Pull the Plantain!

Most people see plantain and think, "There's another w**d."

I see one of the handiest plants growing in the yard.

Traditionally, plantain has been used to soothe bug bites, stings, minor scrapes, and irritated skin. Next time you find some, take a second look before you mow it down.

God often puts exactly what we need right under our feet.

🌿 Simple Remedy: Salt Steam 🌿

If your chest feels heavy, your sinuses are clogged, or you’re fighting off something trying to settle in, this is one of the oldest, simplest remedies you can use.

Salt steam helps:
✔ Loosen mucus in the lungs
✔ Open up sinuses
✔ Soothe irritated airways
✔ Support the body’s natural clearing process

How to do it:

1. Bring a pot of water to a gentle boil
2. Add 1–2 tablespoons of sea salt
3. Remove from heat
4. Lean over the pot (carefully, the steam can be intense), cover your head with a towel
5. Breathe slowly for 10–15 minutes

That’s it. No chemicals. No fuss. Just simple, effective care.

I’ve used this in our home when the airways feel tight or congestion starts creeping in, it’s one of those remedies that reminds you how powerful the basics really are.

“Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24

March is that quiet space between winter and spring.
The days get longer, the chickens start talking again, and you can feel the earth waking under the snow.
It’s the season for simple things.
Warm broth on the stove.
Sourdough rising on the counter.
Garden plans at the kitchen table.
“To everything there is a season.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1
Right now our job is simple.
Nourish the body.
Prepare the home.
Trust the season God placed us in.
Stay rooted.

Friends, thank you for your patience during the quiet here over Christmas. I chose to step away from social media to keep that season set apart for family, worship, and honoring Christ. I’m grateful for each of you who stuck with me. Now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get back to the good work.

Remembering Pearl Harbor: 83 Years Later

Today, December 7, 2024, marks 83 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Over 2,400 lives were lost that day in 1941, forever changing our nation.

Let’s take a moment to honor the bravery of those who served and the sacrifices made. Their courage reminds us to value unity and strive for peace.

We remember, we honor, and we will never forget.
