ALL BLOOD TYPES CAN BE CONSIDERED TO SAVE MY LIFE!

A person on the kidney transplant list with an incompatible (blood and tissue type don’t match) but willing and approved donor can receive a living donor transplant through the paired kidney exchange program.

This means a donor could save at least two lives.

There is no cure for kidney failure. The only treatments are dialysis and transplant. Dialysis is grueling! For over 5 years I have spent at least 15 hours a week hooked up to a machine just to stay alive. A transplant will give me back time…time I want to spend travelling with my husband without worrying about coordinating my dialysis schedule into our trip.

People on the kidney transplant list are running out of time. The wait time for a deceased donor kidney is 3-5 years and can be up to 10 years in some parts of the country.

I can’t wait that long. A living donor will help me get “off the list” and save my life.

While I'm incredibly grateful for the protection of people's privacy, it's hard not knowing if anyone is testing for me. I have no way of knowing if I have 10 people working through the testing process, or no one at all.

I could receive a phone call tomorrow saying I have a living donor and my surgery is scheduled. Or I could continue waiting, wondering, and worrying about when my lifesaving kidney will come.

I know my time will come. I know I will be given a second chance at life. Until then, dialysis is keeping me alive. It's not living, it's existing. But I keep pushing through.

Most living donors don’t have to follow a special diet or take medicines after they donate a kidney. My insurance covers all testing and surgery costs.

I won't be notified if you contact my transplant team. You can back out of donation at any time, for any reason. It doesn't hurt to call to get more information.

Did you know that even though I might look fine, I’m actually very sick? My kidneys no longer function, which means toxins are building up in my body because my blood isn't being properly filtered. I deal with extreme fatigue, brain fog, and other challenging symptoms every day.
