Most people think Parkinson’s start with a tremor. It doesn’t always. One of the earliest and most commonly missed signs of Parkinson’s is reduced arm swing when walking. It can appear years before a formal diagnosis. It can look subtle. It can even feel normal to the person living with it. This appears because Parkinson’s disrupts the brain responsible for automatic movement (basal ganglia). When this happens, the brain begins to require conscious effort for movements that should require none. In this video, after a simple cue to exaggerate arm swing, like a soldier, the brain responds immediately to external stimulus when the internal signal is disrupted. Parkinson’s also affects significantly the brains ability to perform two tasks simultaneously. Retraining the brain for this task is a critical component of PD treatment. Early intervention changes outcome. We don’t accept decline here. If you someone you know has noticed a sudden change in arm swing, gait, voice or facial expression , get assessed.
