It's September, so you know what that means... It's Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, so it's time for my annual soapbox about the health of your ovaries!

Ovarian cancer awareness is very near and dear to my heart, and the teal color of the Cook Genetics logo is in remembrance of my Grandma Mardell. She is the inspiration for my love of cancer genetic counseling.

About 1 in 75 women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetimes, i.e. the average woman has about a 1.5% chance. However, if you have a hereditary predisposition to develop ovarian cancer, that chance exponentially increases (for example, up to 60% chance of ovarian cancer in those with BRCA1 gene mutations).

Also, about 1 in 4 (or 25%) of all cases of ovarian cancer are hereditary. So this means that, while ovarian cancer is rare, it is more likely to have a hereditary genetic component when it does occur.

Genetic testing is recommended for ALL women with ovarian cancer. If they have passed away, it is recommended for their family members (yes, male or female). Thankfully, knowing whether you have a genetic predisposition allows you to take preventative action against ovarian cancer and other cancers, or even receive targeted chemotherapy treatments if necessary.

Because the symptoms of ovarian cancer can be pretty mild, it is quite difficult to diagnose at an early stage, making it the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers. Bloating, feeling full easily, frequent urination, pelvic discomfort/pain, changes in bowel habits, etc., are all symptoms - yet you can see how these may be easily brushed off as “no big deal.”

Ladies, it is so important to listen to your body, know what feels right and what doesn't, and don't be afraid to speak up! If you feel you aren’t being heard or taken seriously by your healthcare provider, find another one who will appropriately evaluate your symptoms.

You know your body better than anyone else. Time to fight back! 💙🧬
