October is National Physical Therapy Month, a time to recognize the knowledge, clinical judgment, and hands-on care physical therapists and physical therapist assistants bring to every patient interaction.

The 5th Edition Physical Therapy Professional Liability Claim Report, developed by HPSO in collaboration with CNA Insurance, identified several important trends related to manual therapy and patient injury. Improper performance of manual therapy remained the most common allegation involving PTs, while dry needling represented a notable area of exposure. The report also found that fractures are now the most common injury type associated with PT claims.

Key Finding # 4: Professional conduct allegations accounted for 46.7% of licensure defense matters, making them the largest licensure defense category in the 2026 dataset.

Many of these matters involve issues that extend beyond clinical care, including professional boundaries, ethical conduct, and other professional responsibilities. The report found that professional conduct, improper performance of treatment, and improper management over the course of treatment accounted for the majority of licensure defense matters.

The average payment for licensure defense expenses increased 14.8%, from $6,420 to $7,369. Although 55% of matters ultimately closed with no action by the State Board of Physical Therapy, investigations can still have significant professional and financial implications.
