Your ferritin is 22. Your labs say “normal.”

So… you’re told your iron is fine.

But what if “normal” isn’t the whole story?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated its guidance around iron deficiency, and one of the biggest changes is the ferritin number we should be paying attention to.

For many children, a ferritin of 20 or below is now considered iron deficiency.

For adolescents and people who menstruate, that number is 30 or below.

And then there’s something else in the publication that really caught my attention…

When it comes to children struggling with things like sleep and behavior, the AAP discusses evidence showing benefits when ferritin is above 50.

𝐖𝐀𝐈𝐓? 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 “𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥” 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥?

Think about it this way:

Your child is exhausted.
They aren’t sleeping well.
They’re struggling with focus or behavior.
Maybe they’re restless at night.

You get bloodwork done.

Ferritin: 23

You’re told everything looks okay.

But does “not technically deficient” mean the same thing as having enough iron to feel and function their best?

That’s the question we need to start asking.

And this applies to menstruating women, too.

If your ferritin is 25 and you’re exhausted, dealing with brain fog, hair shedding, restless legs or struggling to feel like yourself…

Maybe “normal” deserves another conversation.

Normal is a range.
Optimal is personal.

A little introduction, but not the usual “Hi, I’m a nurse practitioner” post. 💙

I didn’t get into functional medicine because I thought conventional medicine was “bad.”

Quite the opposite.

I’ve spent years working in healthcare. I’ve seen the ER, primary care, pediatrics, sick visits, well visits—and everything in between.

But over time, I started noticing how often people were told:

“Your labs are normal.”

“Everything looks fine.”

“Just give it some time.”

And yet… they still didn’t feel good.

That’s what pulled me toward functional medicine.

I wanted to understand the why behind symptoms. I wanted to help people more.

Not just treat the headache, but ask why the headaches keep happening.

Not just tell someone they’re tired, but look at what could be contributing to that fatigue.

Not just manage a child’s symptoms, but ask what their body might be trying to tell us.

I’m still a nurse practitioner.
I still believe in evidence-based medicine.
I still refer out when someone needs a specialist.

I just believe there’s room to look deeper.
I just believe our bodies are designed to be healthy if we support them in the right way.
I just believe that there are times when lifestyle IS medicine.

YOUR BODY ISN’T TRYING TO WORK AGAINST YOU. 💙

Sometimes we get so focused on getting rid of a symptom that we forget to ask why it showed up in the first place.

Fatigue isn’t just “being tired.”

Bloating isn’t just “a sensitive stomach.”

Weight gain isn’t always just “eating too much.”

Headaches aren’t just something you have to live with.

And hormonal symptoms aren’t simply something you have to accept because you’re getting older.

Symptoms are information.

They’re your body telling you that something may need attention.

Functional medicine is about slowing down enough to listen to those signals and look at the bigger picture.

Not chasing every symptom.

Not ordering every test.

Not giving you a giant list of supplements.

Just taking the time to ask:

“What is your body trying to tell us?”

Because sometimes the most helpful thing we can do isn’t silence the signal…

WHAT IF WE STOPPED LOOKING AT EACH SYMPTOM SEPARATELY? 💙

You’re tired… so we talk about energy.

You’re gaining weight… so we talk about calories.

Your hormones are off… so we talk about hormones.

Your stomach hurts… so we talk about digestion.

Your child has headaches… so we talk about headaches.

But what if some of these things are actually connected?

That’s one of the things I love about functional medicine.

Instead of putting every symptom into its own little box, we take a step back and look at the whole picture.

Your history.
Your symptoms.
Your nutrition.
Your sleep.
Your lifestyle.
Your labs.
Your environment.

Then we start asking:

“How might all of these pieces fit together?”

It doesn’t mean every symptom has one big hidden cause.

And it doesn’t mean conventional medicine isn’t important.

It simply means sometimes we can learn a lot by looking at the bigger picture.

Because your body isn’t a collection of separate systems.

Everything is connected.
