What is exfoliation, why is it important, how do I do it right?
🔆 Simply put, exfoliators work to remove the damaged and worn-out skin cells on the outermost layer of your skin to reveal healthier, more vibrant skin cells beneath…but it needs to be done in the right way.
🔆 When I was younger I used to hear the word “exfoliate” and picture those harsh facial scrubs you find in all the department stores. Ouch! 🥴 Those facial scrubs can be so damaging to your skin. Here’s why 👇🏼
The skin on your face is thinner than the rest of your body and therefore more delicate… using harsh exfoliating scrubs with large rough particles, damages the skin by creating micro-tears. These small tears make the skin more prone to dryness, flaky patches, redness, wrinkles, sensitivity, and can even exacerbate existing acne.
So, what do we do to get the amazing benefits of exfoliation, but without spending tons of money on a professional facial and without damaging our skin using department store scrubs?
➡️ There are two different types of exfoliation: chemical and physical.
🔆 Chemical exfoliation involves the application of acids and enzymes on the skin to dissolve dead skin cells (e.g., AHAs/beta hydroxy acid). These acids work on a cellular level to remove dull surface cells, boost skin radiance, improve texture, and decongest pores. Overnight resurfacing peel is a beautiful, safe option for this.
🔆 Physical exfoliation uses tiny particles to slough away dead skin cells mechanically (ex: bamboo). The small particles gently buff away dry, dead skin without disrupting the skin’s barrier. I love BC’s clear pore cleanser.
