Decided to take a weekend trip to Rochester with my main squeeze. I’ve never been anywhere without my parents and I knew it would be a challenge, but Nate insisted we try. Everyone say thank you to Nate for getting me way out of my comfort zone.

We stayed at Comfort Suites in Henrietta. The room was more spacious than other hotels I’ve stayed at. The bathroom had a lip that made it very hard to get the hoyer lift over, but after Nate physically picked up the leg of the lift, it was pretty smooth. We met my local friends for dinner at Strangebird, which was delicious. Then it was time to get into bed.

So the hoyer lift did not fit under the bed until Nate lifted the mattress up a very tiny amount. It fit! Then we hit the box that many hotels have under their bed. We could not get any closer. We had to do what we had to do to get me on the bed, and that meant tipping the lift onto the bed, praying that Nate’s ankles could support the weight and not have the entire lift on top of me. This is very dangerous and I do not recommend it for anyone. Nate had to drag me up the bed so I could sleep. The next morning, he dragged me to the end of the bed and tipped the lift again and hooked me up. He tipped it upright and I was standing feet away from the bed. I got into my chair and we checked out.

We missed breakfast from the whole lift fiasco, so I suggested we go to the Mall at Greece Ridge (Nate wanted to try Wingstop). We didn’t know that it was under construction. We accidentally entered in the wing that had the least amount of shops open, so we took a detour to the other side… until I realized it lead straight to a curb. We then had to backtrack to where we originally entered and go outside to enter the building from another side. The Wingstop did not exist. We scouted the bathrooms to see if there was a single stall family restroom. There was not. I knew there had to be a Walmart Supercenter close by, and they had family bathrooms.

We entered the Walmart with the lift, got very little strange looks, peed and headed out. It was not that stressful, which gets me a little more excited about day trips.

We saw a laser show at the planetarium, ate Wingstop and traveled home.

I am still exhausted lol. I wouldn’t really say it was a relaxing trip, but it was a trip to start with. Next time, I need to research hotels more and get something more accessible. Or maybe bring my own bed? I don’t know.

Special thanks to Nate who never showed fear and made sure I would not die. 🙂‍↕️💜

On Thursday, I made a quick stop at Emerson Park in Auburn. I have never been to a more accessible park. The pier was so long and it was so smooth. I could reach both ends of both piers. The sidewalk had adequate cutaways without huge bumps so I could get on/off easily. I definitely will do a more in depth review later on when I have more time to explore, as the entire park seemed very wheelchair friendly.

All in all, I give Emerson Pier a 10/10. It was incredible!

Hi everyone!

July is disability pride month and as we are nearing the end of it, I’d like to share something that’s been on my mind lately:

I am so afraid of saying the wrong thing, disappointing people, making people hate me by simply living my life and sharing a small piece of it on the internet. My life is full of obstacles and challenges, that’s just the way it is. I cannot sugarcoat my reality. Sometimes people feel deeply uncomfortable by my existence and presence. It is not my responsibility to make others comfortable, and I feel that is a huge part of disability pride: being able to take up space without feeling guilt or shame.

Every time someone asks me when my review page is coming back, it reminds me that visibility matters. No matter how messy, uneventful, imperfect - I have to show up and post. Because who else will share MY experiences with MY thoughts? Nobody but me.

I have to do the damn thing. No more excuses.

Long time no talk!

My van is 15 years old. Last May, my goal was to come back to this page and only do businesses I could access by chair while I was waiting for my new van to be modified.

And then I got hit by a car while in the crosswalk and sprained my foot pretty badly and messed up my chair… so I spent the summer healing.

I’m still waiting for my van to be modified, but we’re getting closer!

See you soon👩‍🦼‍➡️

Mama Gina's Ristorante and Pizzeria, located at 101 South 2nd Street, Fulton, NY. 📍

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

(+) Pros: fully wheelchair accessible, breezeway is nice and spacious so I could easily access both doors without having to have 2 people open both doors, spacious restaurant area, light cups.

(-) Cons: first time I’m ever saying this 🤯 most of the tables are too low for me! (but there was a perfect height table for me in the bar area, just wish there was more at that height), the parking lot is pot hole city!

I haven’t been in Mama Gina’s since 2017 and it has gotten a major facelift since then! The restaurant is beautiful and so open, maneuvering was a breeze!

My only complaint is that if more than one person in a wheelchair went to eat here, we might have to fight over a table.

All in all, great experience! 👍

Blue Moon Grill, located at 122 Cayuga St, Fulton, NY. 📍

★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

(+) Pros: the main entrance is accessible! All the tables I saw were low level and adequately spaced so everyone could move comfortably, straws were given without asking!

(-) Cons: cannot access bar area (as shown by picture #3), the main entrance requires at least two people to get me in because of how small it is, hard maneuvering around open inside door, party area inaccessible below

After our meal, we went by the Dollar General entrance to see if we could access the bar through what we thought was the front door. Turns out, we ran into the “husband of the new owner”, (his words!!not mine!) Matt, who revealed that the Cayuga Street entrance is actually the front! Who knew!

We talked with Matt about the upcoming renovations starting next week and (of course) my concerns with the accessibility of the building. As all the owners of the places I’ve reviewed, he was very pleasant during our face-to-face interaction. Nice to meet you, Matt!

Blue Moon Grill changed owners last winter, and now big changes are coming for the restaurant!! Over the next couple weeks, they are revamping not only the interior, but the menu too! Can’t wait to review after they are done!
