Something in my spirit told me last year, as we pulled out of the drive way leaving Milner, it was quite possibly our last Thanksgiving with our precious Papa. I don’t know why that feeling was so heavy on me. Gah………I miss this precious man so much. Thanksgiving just isn’t the same without him. Even the kids talked about how they missed our trip to Milner, where we sit and do nothing for several days, yet leave so fulfilled. Where there’s no internet and no tv to watch. Just time to sit around the table and laugh, play games and enjoy every second talking and listening to stories of my Papa’s life. ❤️ Time is precious. Enjoy every second. Take the photos. Make the effort. Life is short. Even 97 years just wasn’t long enough.

This is the sweetest gift. This is from Shawn Ellis at Fade 98, the barber that cut Papas hair while he was in Gaffney. Shawn refused to take payment from Papa since he was a veteran. Instead, he’d tell him it cost $1 and he wanted his greatest piece of advice. Papa would always reply, Keep Looking Up! 🕊️

This past week our family was able to bless Shawn with a gift for his new barber school where young men will learn this valuable trade and in turn be able to start their career.

This photo is from Papa’s first visit to Shawn and the dollars are ones he gave Shawn for payment.

Please be in prayer for Shawn as he starts this school and ministers to many young men in this community. Thank you Shawn for being such a tremendous blessing to us and Papa!

As we prepare to lay Papa’s earthly body to rest today, I wanted to share another one of his devotions. Bear with him as he reads—it may start slow, but it turns into a beautiful message about fearing the Lord, just as Joshua did in the Bible. His words continue to guide and inspire us, even now.

Probably the last time he lead prayer for us as a family. This was his last hospital stay in March 2025.

I can’t remember a Thanksgiving that we didn’t spend with Papa Buff. Even after Dad and Donnie passed away we kept the tradition going. We loved to look for fun things to do with Papa and keep him involved with us. Last year we took him “bowling” at home. 😂
