Fun Facts Friday

Q: Did you know enslaved African Americans preserved and passed down herbal knowledge despite the hardships of slavery?

A: Plants were an important part of everyday care when access to medical treatment was limited.

This knowledge was passed through families and communities, including the knowledge of healers, midwives, and root doctors.

Their herbal traditions drew from African knowledge, Indigenous plant knowledge, and experience with the plants growing around them.

Did you know?
Sassafras was one plant used in African American folk medicine and was traditionally prepared as a tea for things such as fevers and chills.

Try this:
When you learn about an herb, learn a little about the people and traditions that carried its knowledge forward.

What herbal knowledge was passed down in your family?

Happy World Beard Day! 🧔

I love making herbal products for beards. There’s something special about turning simple oils and herbs into something that keeps the beard and the skin underneath feeling cared for.

Beards deserve a little herbal love too.

Consultation Spotlight: Herbal First Aid Basics

One of the things I love teaching people is how to feel more confident using herbs at home.

A little scrape happens. Someone gets a bump. A bug bite shows up. And suddenly you're standing in front of your herbal cabinet thinking…

“Okay…what do I actually use?"😅

That's where I can help.

During an Herbal First Aid Basics consultation, we'll talk through the remedies I think are worth having on hand and how to build a simple, practical herbal first aid kit that works for you and your family.

No overwhelming list. No trying to memorize everything.

Just sitting down together, talking through what you need, and helping you feel more confident with your herbs.

If you've been wanting to create your own herbal first aid kit, I'd love to help.

Send me “FIRST AID” and let's talk.

FAQs

Wondering about wild herbs and foraging? Here are three common questions:

Is it safe to forage wild herbs?
Yes, only if you can confidently identify the plant and know it grows in a clean, safe environment. When in doubt, leave it out.

How can I identify herbs correctly?
Look at the entire plant, not just one feature or an ID app. Use a reputable field guide and learn from an experienced forager.

How long do fresh herbs stay fresh?
It depends on the plant and storage. Discard herbs with mold, an unusual smell, or a slimy texture.

The most important lesson? Know your plant.

Foraging is a wonderful way to connect with nature, but it should always be learned carefully and responsibly.

Sunday Tea Ritual: Lemon Balm

Some herbs feel medicinal. Others simply invite you to slow down.

Today, I’m enjoying lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). Its bright, lemony aroma makes it a lovely herb for a quiet tea ritual and a few peaceful moments.

Make a cup, take a breath, and sip slowly. You don’t have to make every cup of tea productive. Sometimes the ritual is enough.

Sunday reflection:
Where could you use a little more softness this week?

Maybe it’s resting, spending time outside, or taking ten quiet minutes with your tea.

What herb helps you slow down?

Herbs are not one-size-fits-all. Consider medications, pregnancy, allergies, and individual health needs when choosing herbs.
