Ever notice how some folks switch to “MEGA‑LOUD MODE” the moment they talk to an older adult or someone living with dementia?

(eeeeeeeeeek!)

Friendly Tips:

Hearing and cognition are two different things.

Please use your normal voice — it’s kinder, calmer, and way less startling.

Shouting doesn't help relationships - period.

I was once asked by a husband who was caring for his wife with dementia, "Do I really need to change the way I communicate with her considering we have been happily married for over 50 years?"

My answer was, "Yes."

That question stuck with me.
It shows just how big the shift can be for care partners.
After a lifetime of shared routines, inside jokes, habits, and rhythms, dementia begs us to communicate in a whole new way.

Not because the love is different — but because the brain is.

Fifty years of doing things one way… and still choosing to grow for the person you love.
That’s powerful.

"Dementia" is NOT a diagnosis.

"Dementia" is an umbrella term for a collection of symptoms.

The diagnosis is what TYPE of neurodegenerative condition is causing the dementia symptoms.

There are over 120 different types, causes, and forms of dementia under the umbrella.

Does it matter which type someone has? YES.
