This is how it feels to grieve…
It’s not how you would normally picture it.
It’s rarely an uncontrollable sob.
It’s seldom visible on the outside.
It’s a course through your veins kind of throb.
It’s a faraway stare off in space.
It’s forgetting what you were doing.
It’s a blank expressionless face.
It’s a new lens to a world left in ruin.
It’s an energy you can’t seem to muster.
It’s a fatigue you can’t seem to shake.
It’s pinching yourself out of a nightmare,
that you realize is no dream when you wake.
It’s going through all the motions,
of the ordinary everyday jobs.
It’s learning how to perfect a smile,
while simultaneously choking back sobs.
It’s seeing a glass left half empty,
while showing the world it’s half full.
It’s losing your desire for connecting,
but giving in with a push or a pull.
It’s plans you make and then cancel,
because hobbies now feel like a chore.
It’s relationships continually tested,
because you’re not who you were once before.
It’s a silence that screams and then deafens.
It’s a stillness to the core of your soul.
It’s a heaviness that can never be lifted.
It’s a getting through the day is your goal.
It’s a constant treading of water,
and you can’t fight your way back to shore.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg,
because grief… it encompasses more.
It’s a constant shape-shift of emotions.
It’s panic, it’s numbing, it’s guilt.
It’s the ripping out of a foundation,
that took your whole life to be built.
It’s learning that life keeps on going.
It resumes to its usual pace.
And you’re left searching for the pieces,
of the you from another time, another place.
And even if you find all the pieces,
they’re weathered, they’ve taken a toll.
That even when you put them together,
their sum will not make you a whole.
It’s coming to grips with what’s broken.
It’s reminding yourself to still breathe.
It’s accepting the reliving of trauma.
This…
is what it feels like…
to grieve.
