Tongue ties are SO common, and I’ve had so many clients with tongue tied babies lately

First and foremost - mamas, if you’re dreading nursing because of pain, we need to talk. Whether it’s a tie or something else happening with the latch, it shouldn’t feel like that.

The thing is - all of the symptoms above COULD indicate a tongue tie. It could also be something else.

Most importantly, how baby is growing and how mom is feeling when baby nurses should dictate the kind of treatment.

Myth: “If breastfeeding doesn’t come naturally, something is wrong.”

Truth: While babies have feeding instincts, breastfeeding is still a learned skill for both of you.

Natural does NOT mean easy!

Sometimes it takes:
• practice
• positioning adjustments
• time
• guidance

Struggling at first doesn’t mean it’s not meant for you.
✨ Learning something new doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

Myth: If your baby is hungry again quickly, something went wrong with the last feed.
Truth: Babies sometimes want to eat again because… they’re babies.

Frequent feeding can happen because:
• babies are growing
• they want comfort
• their stomachs are tiny
• they’re building milk supply

Feeding again soon doesn’t automatically mean the last feed “failed.”

Myth: Frequent feeding means your body isn’t keeping up.

Truth: Cluster feeding is usually a normal, temporary phase—especially in the early weeks.

Babies cluster feed to:
• boost milk supply
• get through growth spurts
• regulate their nervous system
• tank up in the evenings to start regulating their sleep/wake cycle

It feels intense, exhausting, and confusing—but it doesn’t automatically mean anything is wrong.

Before you panic or assume failure, pause.
This is likely your body and baby working exactly as designed.

That first hour after birth is often called the golden hour—and for good reason.

During this time, babies are:
• alert
• instinctively ready to feed
• primed for skin-to-skin and bonding

Support during this window can make a big difference in how feeding gets started.
And if it didn’t go as planned? You didn’t miss your chance.

One of the top questions I get is: How do I know they’re getting enough?
It’s easy with a bottle, right? The lines with the ounces listed are right there. Bing, bam, boom. Done.
It’s not the same with breastfed babies. Especially when it’s your first baby, and it’s those first few days at home. it helps to know what else to look for.

Here are just 3:

1. Regular wet and dirty diapers - what is ‘regular’?
Days 1-4, go by that number. One on day 1, two on day 2, etc. This is a minimum. By day 4, you’ll likely be around 5-6.

2. Baby is content after effective feeds.
Content usually equals sleepy that first week. But making sure they have an effective feed before they’re too sleepy is key. This means you hear sucking and swallowing, and they are active in that pattern for a stretch of 5-6 minutes before getting sleepy.

3. Regular, steady weight gain
Your baby’s healthcare provider will be weighing your baby a lot the first week or two, and there’s a great reason. This is one of the primary ways we know that your baby’s getting enough milk. But it’s also the hardest one for parents, because it’s not an immediate benchmark. Even once in 24 hours seems like an eternity when we’re dealing in ounces, and 8-12 feeds in that time frame.

Feeding doesn’t have to feel like guesswork.
And if you’re unsure, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

There’s a lot of pressure to love every second of this season.

But some moments are difficult.
Some are exhausting.
Some are overwhelming.

Not enjoying every moment doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful for that sweet baby or failing as a parent.
It means you’re human, and this raising a tiny human thing is really, really hard.

It’s normal to love your baby deeply and find parts of this really tough.

Truth: Newborns aren’t capable of manipulation. They cry because they need something—food, comfort, warmth, reassurance.

Responding to your baby doesn’t create bad habits.
It builds trust and security.

You’re not spoiling your baby.
You’re showing them the world is safe—and that you show up.

That’s not a problem. That’s parenting. 🩷
