Oxytocin — the connection chemical (and what it actually does)

Humans are wired for connection. When you feel trust with safety — the settled, unguarded kind — that's oxytocin doing part of its job.

Made in the hypothalamus, oxytocin is tied to closeness, bonding, and belonging. It shows up around touch, eye contact, and small acts of kindness, and it's part of how the body dials down stress when you feel safe. It's not just romantic — the same system runs through friendships, family, teammates, and the bond with a pet. It gets a nudge when you hug someone, pet an animal, or get a massage.

Here's the honest part, because you won't hear it from the "love hormone" headlines: you can't read your oxytocin level off how you feel, and the famous studies claiming a nose spray makes people more trusting mostly didn't replicate. Oxytocin looks less like a love switch and more like a volume k**b on the social moment you're already in — which is why it can warm you toward people you trust and sharpen your guard toward outsiders. Real and worth supporting. Just not magic.

A few things associated with connection — good for you, not guaranteed hacks:

• Long, unhurried hugs (touch calms the nervous system — when you feel safe)
• Real eye contact
• Time with a dog, cat, or other animal
• Small kindnesses with no strings attached
• A little honest vulnerability, in a safe context

And the simple stuff counts: text an encouraging word to a friend, share something real with someone you trust, end the day naming a few people you're grateful for. None of it cures anything — but connection is one of the few things that reliably makes life feel more meaningful.

Sometimes a number on a report doesn’t tell the whole story.

A new study published in JAMA Network Open looked at 33 former NFL players who had undergone neuropsychological testing during life and were later confirmed to have CTE at autopsy.

And one part of the findings immediately caught my attention.

Among the players with high-stage CTE, seven had received a cognitive-impairment rating of 0 through the NFL concussion settlement’s Baseline Assessment Program—the lowest impairment category.

Yet when researchers examined their individual neuropsychological test results, six of those seven showed measurable impairment on at least one test.

That doesn’t mean the testing was useless. It means something more interesting: how we define impairment matters.

Across the larger group, learning and memory problems were the most common. Executive function and language were also frequently affected. And greater phosphorylated-tau burden in the brain was associated with worse learning and memory performance.

To me, this is the part worth paying attention to.

A person can fall on one side of a diagnostic or compensation threshold while still having very real cognitive difficulties underneath it.

The classification and the biology are not necessarily telling you the same thing.

That distinction matters—not only for CTE research, but for how we think about neurological impairment more broadly.
