The design of clinical research is a complex task that requires post graduate study of research methods and statistics. I studied these topics at the masters and doctorate level. Dr. Rubin gives a good overview. Since the Tuskegee debacle medical ethics has advanced. Currently, scientists are required to regularly repeat courses in how to protect human subjects and all human research has to be approved by a review board focused on protecting human subjects enrolled in the study. They would never allow placebo controlled trials for any treatment if the placebo would replace a known effective treatment. The trial would compare the new treatment to the old treatment.

Beware pseudoscience and anti-science propaganda. I originally started this page to share my nursing-informed self care advice. Now, social media is a hotbed of useless, dangerous, healthcare opinions. Dr. Rubin is one of the few MD influencers I follow. This nurse trusts his medical opinions.

Brain health is on my mind. Our brains are like a garden that needs to be tended. In the brain, messages flow across synapses between brain cells that become well worn pathways with repetition. Practice makes perfect and unused connections are pruned away naturally during sleep. Old unrehearsed memories fade or are forgotten. Let us think often about the people and experiences we want to remember and release the memories that cause us difficulty by redirecting our waking thoughts away from painful things to what we can do now, then get enough sleep. The clarity of mind that comes with this practice will free up brain space for solving the problems that need to be solved.

If you live in the local area, you can register on MyChart at Metro Health, Spectrum Health, or Mercy Health to be notified as soon as you are eligible to schedule your vaccination. There is a questionnaire to complete then they will notify you through MyChart to schedule your appointment. Young people should not wait, put your name in line now.
