In honor of May being stroke awareness month, I’m reposting this photo for transparency; I was only 90 pounds here. All through high school, I was 160 pounds. This was me 10 years ago on today. I came out of my stroke with no voice at all, I couldn’t see too great, I couldn’t walk and I couldn’t write. It took me 8 months to walk again without my cane. I was wheelchair dependent with a severe case of drop foot, shortness of breath and unsteadiness. These were the first photos taken of me STANDING and WALKING around my favorite mall! Every item I have on here, I still have! Even down to the person taking the photo and the car I drove us to the mall in that day! The same person that listened to me cry about the pain my body was always in, how God didn’t answer my prayer, “all the way,” and how depression is what got me here...The same car that my mom loaded my wheelchair in and out of is sitting outside, STILL RUNNING…I said all that to say, here I am, almost 11 years later, graduating this December from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and Business Administration. I lost my grandma Shirley shortly after recovering from my stoke…and then lost my grandma Myrolene this year in the mist of me trying to not PRAY death upon myself again and be back in this situation again; a sudden cardiac arrest and stroke survivor. Prayer is a powerful thing. I AM THE PROOF. Waking up in a hospital and being told by your mother, “Yes, baby…you died…it took them 30 minutes to revive you…your blood sugar was over 2,000…” is an insane thought to still come to terms with. I remember seeing everyone that came in my room while I was on life support when my eyes finally opened. Every single one. My mom and my dad sat with me longer than anyone did because they had faith I was going to make it. My stroke caused me to have kidney failure a year later in 2016…But here I am…in 2026! I put fear on the faces and in the souls of people that talked bad about me now. All I have to do is show up. Why?! Because God never played about me…so he made sure I knew to stop playing with Him! I shared my story live on the news with the state of North Carolina, North Carolina A&T and Project Kitty Hawk and gained so many notable recognitions in 2025. I started a business last year as well to honor myself and this journey of mine! And I started working again last year! I maintained a 2.8 GPA and 18 credit hours in classes for 2 years straight! All while going to dialysis and living alone! Until I got a kidney transplant in 2022! I never missed a bill, a treatment nor a class! I NEVER quit…even though I literally prayed for “a break,” because I was, “tired.” This is what God did for me. He gave me exactly what I asked for. And craziest thing I can ever say is, I needed it. Sadly, I needed a new start. A new life. A second chance...

I kept fighting for my family. NOT for me…and for…
The disabled🌻
The diabetics 💙
The renal patients💚
THE STROKE SURVIVORS! ❤️

So yes, my “little business,” is my first my first baby and it means the world to me! I own it! On the first page of my website, I did my best to summarize this long post! The sunflower is the flower that represents people with hidden disabilities. Several of which I have. That is the reason why I sell those products. It’s not over the top. It’s just simply that.

Yesterday at 11:50 a.m., I submitted my LAST research assignment for the semester! I have ONE class left now! So, it’s official…I am now, A GRADUATING SENIOR of THE illustrious North Carolina A&T State University. All of the long nights from 2018-2022 dealing with body cramps after dialysis, a fistula that also would never stop bleeding after dialysis, still managing to drive myself to class after all of that, never missed a day of class, and managed to take care of an elderly sick dog, wrecking my car AND losing my vision in my left eye…and last but not least, RECEIVING A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT in 2022!!!! Whewwww. I made itttttt!! I FINALLY MADE IT!! 🥹😭 If I can do it, there are no excuses!! YOU CAN TOO!! I will be walking in December of 2026!!!

Let’s not forget that May is stroke awareness month!! The day that I had my stroke was October 17, 2015, and that day lead me here. It’s been a rough one but I’m still here! Wear red this month if you or someone you know suffered from a stroke!

Hello all!

I am looking for anyone interested in participating in a discussion I wrote for my final class project for this semester!

Discussion Prompt: The Future of Afro-Nostalgia
In Afro-Nostalgia: Feeling Good in Contemporary Black Culture, Badia Ahad-Legardy explores how reconnecting with the past through joy, memory, and feeling can reshape how Black culture is understood in the present.

Discussion Question:
How can Afro-Nostalgia be used in the future to not only remember the past, but actively reshape Black identity, community, and cultural power? In what ways might focusing on joy, care, and creativity challenge dominant narratives that center trauma, and how can this shift influence both individual self-understanding and collective progress?

Additional questions to consider when answering(optional):

* How can Afro-Nostalgia help redefine what Black history “looks like” in schools, media, and everyday life?
* Can focusing on joy and nostalgia be healing, or does it risk ignoring important struggles?
* How might Afro-Nostalgia strengthen community and belonging, especially across the African diaspora?
* In what ways can everyday practices (like hair, food, music, or family traditions) become tools of cultural power?
* How can individuals use Afro-Nostalgia to reclaim identity while also creating new cultural expressions for the future?

This is an open discussion. All are welcome to participate. You may respond in the comments of this post and engage with one another or message me directly, if that makes you feel more comfortable. This discussion will be open until May 4th. I will repost it several times from now until then. Thanks so much in advance!!
