Did you know that at least 80% of visible skin aging and the vast majority of skin cancers are caused by UV radiation from the sun? ☀️ As we're cruising into the sun-drenched summer months it's important to remember that safe skin isn't just for beach days—it’s an everyday commitment.

Protecting your skin doesn't have to be complicated. Remember the golden rules:
1️⃣ Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) BEFORE sun exposure.
2️⃣ Reapply every two hours if you are outdoors.
3️⃣ Wear sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

In eastern North Carolina, "in like a lion, out like a lamb" might as well describe the pollen counts this time of year. But is it the last of cold and flu season getting to you, or the pollen? Usually, allergies will have more "itchy" symptoms and watery eyes and nose. Cold viruses are more likely to cause a fever and thicker mucous. By the way, the color of your mucous doesn't point to viral vs bacterial infections, but that's a different post.

For those of you who would like to talk to a doctor you can trust, have a thorough physical exam, and have a comprehensive lab workup without necessarily signing up to become a patient, I'm happy to offer comprehensive health screenings at Downeast Primary Care. You'll get an hour long consultation and exam, along with your choice of laboratory packages based on your interests and needs, all for less than the cost of the labs by themselves if you were to use something like LabCorp on demand to order your own labs. No prescriptions or medical management is included in these screening visits, but if you choose to become a member withing 3 months, I'll waive the registration fees.
