Maximizing the medicine within.

Winter and virus season is upon us and I'll bring up the white elephant in the room: the Covid-19 virus. It disheartens me to no end that there is limited to no dialogue in the mass media about optimizing our immunity as the best way to fight off viruses. When it comes to infectious diseases we are never advised to take care of ourselves yet all the while we have the medicine WITHIN and from mother nature that is at little cost: chose whole foods that boost immunity and eliminate foods that destroy it, take high doses of Vit C +Vit D, sleep 8-10 hrs, get outside for a run or walk, sit on your couch and meditate or breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes, do yoga or qigong in your living room. THIS is the best way to care for both infectious and chronic disease. It's time we all start to reclaim our inner authority and kick to the curb the mass media and govts' desire to keep you fear-based. Remember- your own body is a pharmaceutical factory! Start spending there and investing in your self-care instead:)

This a virus-busting Ayurvedic favorite that tastes delicious, delightful to hold in your hands to drink, pretty to look at + a POWERHOUSE for your immunity. The main star, turmeric, possesses a wide variety of antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic properties, as well as vitamins and minerals. Drink this daily and see for yourself:) My favorite recipe comes from and here the plant-based version :

Golden (Turmeric) Milk
Warning: Turmeric can stain clothing and countertops, so proceed with caution!
Serves 1
1 cup milk (almond milk or canned or refrigerated coconut milk)
1/4-1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
3/4- 1 teaspoon honey or agave nectar (depending on desired sweetness)
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (or a few cardamom pods)
pinch of powdered ginger or small piece of peeled ginger root
dash of vanilla extract
dash of black pepper or black peppercorns
pinch of cloves and allspice, optional


Heat the milk on the stove. When milk becomes warm, add turmeric powder. Stir slowly to dissolve any lumps. The liquid will take on a rich, mustard color. Add the honey, ginger root, vanilla and spices. Keep the pot on gentle heat for a few minutes. Pour the milk through a fine sieve to remove the ginger root, cardamom and pepper. (The turmeric can be a bit grainy, too.)

FYI: Curcumin, a natural compound found in the spice turmeric, could help eliminate certain viruses, research has found. A study published in the Journal of General Virology showed that curcumin can prevent Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) – an alpha-group coronavirus that infects pigs – from infecting cells. At higher doses, the compound was also found to kill virus particles. This makes it a "candidate" in the fight to find a cure or antidote for the novel coronavirus. Happy New Moon in Sagittarius and I don't know about you but i welcome with open arms this more fun energy as last month's Scorpio energy was a doozy! Sagittarius, as the eternal optimist and freedom seeker, wants you to always look on the bright side of life and adventure out either into the physical world or mental realm to get what your heart and soul desire. Hone in on YOUR truth, knowing what you want, and seeking the knowledge you need to make it happen. It's almost the end of the year and the perfect New Moon to conceptualize how 2021 will be for you. You've been doing the work all year so let the Archer's arrow of inspiration be strong and true!

Chana Masala (Curried Chickpeas) is about as near perfect food energy for this Sag New Moon as it blends both fiery Solar Plexus Chakra energy with Throat Chakra energy, both aligned with Sagittarius. Here is an easy and authentic Slow Cooker recipe that I adapted from my tutelage with my Indian friend, Taru.

FOOD ENERGY:
💛 SOLAR PLEXUS for acting from your inner power: onion, garlic, ginger, chickpeas, rice
💙 THROAT for speaking your truth: tomato, water and it’s an Indian dish

Serves 4-5 as main dish
1 tablespoon avocado or coconut oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (or ground cumin)
1 small onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
1 tablespoon chana masala
½ teaspoon ground turmeric
2 (15-ounce) cans of chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1 tomato, chopped
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ cup fresh cilantro, more for garnish
Cooked brown or white rice

Heat the oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add in the cumin seeds and cook stirring occasionally until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add in the onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and ginger sautéing for another minute. Add in the chana masala and turmeric for another 30 seconds. Place the chickpeas, tomato and ½-1 cup water in the slow cooker. Pour in the onion mixture and salt mixing all ingredients together. Cover and cook on LOW for 5-7 hours or on HIGH for 3 ½ - 4 hours. At the final hour, add in the fresh cilantro. Serve over hot basmati rice.

Working on my Throat Chakra this week and while this authentic and delicious Indian curry dish from .stpete may not be obvious as to it’s healing energy it really does resonate with your Throat Chakra. Your 5th energy center is your seat of authentic expression and all ethnic dishes are a beautiful expression of a culture. It also has lots of tomato in it which is a whole food aligned with your Throat Chakra.

I just had to be in the kitchen yesterday as i was so inspired by the orange produce from yesterday’s post. At first i just wanted to make a ginger carrot soup but then i found myself wondering what it would be like to add them all in - well butternut squash took the place of persimmon - and the end result was spectacular. And of course i just had to share!

FOOD ENERGY:
Winter Wonder Soup
❤️ ROOT for grounding: sweet potatoes, onion, garlic, ginger, carrots, oranges
🧡 SACRAL for joy and wonder : sweet potato, water, oil, pumpkin, carrots, oranges, almond/coconut milk
💛 SOLAR PLEXUS for acting from your inner power: sweet potato, onion, garlic, ginger, butternut squash
💚 HEART for love and gratitude : cilantro
💙 THROAT for speaking your truth: broth, water and a soup
💜 THIRD EYE for trusting your intuition: nutmeg

Serves 6
40-50 minutes
1 tablespoon coconut or avocado oil
1 large sweet onion, peeled and chopped
4 garlic cloves, chopped
1-2 tablespoons ginger, peeled and chopped
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, additional for garnish
1 cup vegetable broth
2 cups water
Juice of 1-2 orange, optional
2 large carrots, chopped
2 cups cubed butternut squash
1 large sweet potato, peeled and cubed
½ -1 cup pumpkin puree
½-1 teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
2-3 cups coconut or almond milk (or a mix of both)
Fresh cilantro, optional

Heat oil in a large stock pot over medium-high heat. Add in the onion and following 3 ingredients and saute for a few minutes until onions are translucent and garlic and ginger are fragrant, careful not to burn them. Pour in the vegetable broth, water, orange juice, salt and pepper. Bring to a low boil, reduce heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes or vegetables are tender. Either carefully transfer the soup mixture to a blender and blend until smooth or use an immersion blender right in the stock pot. If using the blender, transfer the soup back to the stockpot, add in the milk(s) and simmer until heated back through.Serve by ladling into individual soup bowls and sprinkling with some nutmeg and cilantro.

While all of your 7 chakras are equally important (in their totality they reflect our human life) it is my belief that until your foundational energy center or Root Chakra is functioning in a healthy way all other work is ineffective. Even for those of us that do not have childhood trauma that would cause the Root Chakra to be severely blocked we could all use grounding on a regular basis. We live in a culture that is removed from the ground of the planet and that does not value the physical world and continually separates us from our ground. This has had a detrimental effect on us individually as well as collectively.

Grounding can be as simple as walking barefoot on the earth ( soil, sand, water) but it’s even easier to activate your 1st Charka through what you eat. I have been juicing for a few months now and while a green juice is my daily choice (go to that post for my favorite combo) I really enjoy my “ Beet Grounded” juice; it’s like drinking dessert i kid you not! Only three ingredients and all tapped into your Root energy. It’s the hectic holiday season amidst covid season so you need some of this !

FOOD ENERGY:

1 large organic beet
1 large organic apple
2-3 large organic carrots

How do you choose what you eat? Is it a CONSCIOUS choice? In 2016 I learned about the Chakra system and how every whole food resonates with one or more Chakras. I have been eating for my energy centers ever since. Eating for your energy centers IS conscious eating as both are about emotional, physical and spiritual alignment. When you are conscious of what and how you eat, you generate energy that is optimized for your wellness and living. When you eat to optimize your Chakras you are making the conscious choice to honor your human aliveness or mind-body-spirit integration. If you are NOT eating or living consciously, well, life here on planet Earth can get tricky, difficult, spin you to dis-ease, or keep you locked into negative conditioning and disintegration.

This Sweet and Spicy Pearl Onions recipe highlights how easy it is- only one ingredient! - to eat for conscious alignment. These onions are "activating Heaven and Earth" as it's predominantly healing for your Root (and Solar Plexus) as well as aligns you with your Third Eye Higher Self's wisdom. These are so good! I've never gravitated toward pearl onions but decided to add them to my produce box out of curiosity as to what I could do with them. Turns out alot! Eat them as is, as a topping for BBQ Black Beans (see pic two), in French Onion soup , spooned on pears or apple slices, smeared on baguette, scooped into an endive leaf.

❤️ ROOT for feeling secure: pearl onions
🧡 SACRAL for creativity/avocado oil
💛 SOLAR PLEXUS for inner power: pearl onions
💜 THIRD EYE for inner wisdom: chipotle peppers

2 cups pearl onions, skin on
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon avocado oil
1-2 tablespoons minced chipotle from a jar or the liquid

Preheat the oven to 350F. In a medium saucepan, parboil the onions for 3 minutes and then rinse in cold water until cool enough to handle. Slice the root end of the onion off, and then pop the onion out from its outer skin. In a small ovenproof pan or rimmed baking sheet, combine the onions, maple syrup, oil and chipotle/liquid. Roast for about 20 to 25 minutes until tender and caramelized.

1/2tablespoon coconut or avocado oil

1 red bell pepper, chopped
6cups water
2 sweet potatoes, diced
8 ounces sliced mushrooms
4-6cup kale, torn into bite sized pieces 1teaspoon ground turmeric
1teaspoon ground cumin
1/4teaspoon each- ground cardamom, cinnamon, Himalayan sea salt, ground black pepper

Heat the oil in a large saucepan or dutch oven. Add in the onion, garlic and ginger and saute for 1 minute or until onions are translucent and ginger and garlic are fragrant. Add in the bell pepper and saute for another minute. Pour in the water, add in the remaining ingredients (sweet potatoes through black pepper), bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-high and cook for about 15-20 minutes .

Our natural state is love and joy. But most of us set conditions on our love and suppress our joy. We’ve held love and joy captive or revert to default programming which is not to love because we are afraid or ignorant of it and not to allow joy because it feels frivolous or we don’t feel worthy. But this is wrong thinking! And comes out of a 2,000 year cycle on this planet that has emphasized the external or “false” self that can’t understand this is our natural state.

But we are ushering in a new cycle, one in which we come to see we are all one (love) on this planet and to live joyfully together. This can only come as we each do our own inner work. It is through inner journeying that we can embrace and live our lives in love and joy. There are many modalities to help you do the inner work but why don’t you try one that isn’t expensive and is something you already do at least a few times a day? EAT to keep your main energy centers (chakra) flowing freely.

Start with my new fav way to prepare sweet potato fries, a super food in both the nutritional and energetic realms, which is amped up in the energy of joy when you top it with coconut and dip it in a coconut siriacha. Add some fresh cilantro for some color and herbal goodness as well as the energy of love and gratitude.

Toasted Coconut and Cilantro Sweet Potato Fries

Bake sweet potato wedges at 400 F in a little coconut oil, salt and pepper for 30 minutes. During last 10 minutes top with coconut shreds. Remove from oven and sprinkle liberally with cilantro. To making dipping sauce: combine coconut milk, siriacha, a pinch of salt and a little honey in a small bowl.
