"Breathe from your belly." You have heard it. But has anyone actually explained what your chest breathing is doing in the meantime?

Chest breathing โ€” short, shallow breaths that expand the upper chest โ€” keeps the accessory neck and shoulder muscles working overtime. It also signals the nervous system in a way that is associated with mild stress activation. Not dramatically. Just enough to keep the system from fully settling.

Diaphragmatic breathing does the opposite. Slower, deeper, more efficient, and associated with lower muscle tension throughout the body, including the jaw.

The way you breathe all day is shaping how your body feels by evening. Swipe through to see why. ๐Ÿ‘‰

If jaw tension, neck tightness, or fatigue that builds through the day have been part of your experience, reach out to Sawtooth Myofunctional Therapy to schedule your complimentary 15-minute consultation.

Here is something most people have never thought about.

Your tongue weighs roughly as much as a deck of cards. And during sleep, when muscle tone naturally drops across the whole body, that weight goes somewhere.

When the tongue has a strong, well-coordinated resting posture, it maintains a position in the roof of the mouth that helps support the upper airway during sleep. When it lacks tone or rests low, gravity can pull it toward the back of the throat, narrowing the airway and making breathing more effortful through the night.

This is not something most people are ever told. But it is one of the reasons tongue-resting posture is foundational in myofunctional therapy and one of the first things assessed in a comprehensive myofunctional evaluation at Sawtooth.

The tongue is doing something every hour of every night. It is worth knowing what.

If disrupted sleep or airway concerns have been part of your experience, reach out to Sawtooth Myofunctional Therapy to schedule your complimentary 15-minute consultation. We would love to help you understand the full picture.

Something about September feels like permission to begin again.

Not the pressure of a New Year resolution.
Just the quiet sense that the timing is actually right and that the thing you have been putting off might finally be ready to move off the list. If myofunctional therapy has been sitting on your "I should look into that" list, for your sleep, your jaw, your breathing, or your child โ€” this might be the week it moves.

We are currently welcoming new clients at Sawtooth Myofunctional Therapy.

Start with a complimentary 15-minute consultation, no commitment, just a conversation. Reach out and let us know what is going on. We would love to hear from you.

Most parents head into back-to-school season with a solid health checklist.

Vaccines. Vision. Dentist. Physical. The things that have always been part of getting a child ready for the year ahead. And those things matter, completely.

But there is a layer of back-to-school health that rarely makes the list. Not because it is less important, but because most families have never been told it belongs there.

How a child breathes at rest, through the nose or through the mouth, can be associated with how well they sleep and how their jaw and facial structures develop over time.

Where the tongue rests when the mouth is closed influences the balance of forces on the developing palate and dental arches in ways that accumulate gradually and quietly.

Whether a consistent sleep schedule is in place before the first day of school, not just after, can make a meaningful difference in how a child transitions into the demands of a new year.

And for children currently in a comprehensive myofunctional therapy program, whether their prescribed exercises are happening consistently is one of the most important health questions of the season.

None of these require a separate appointment to notice. They just require knowing they are worth paying attention to.

Consider this your permission to add them to the list.

If anything here made you think of something you have noticed in your child, that observation is worth a conversation. Reach out to schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation at Sawtooth Myofunctional Therapy. We are happy to answer questions before you commit to anything.

If you have been told your exhaustion is just stress, just hormones, or just the season of life you are in, this might be worth a moment of your attention.

Research suggests that women with sleep-disordered breathing frequently present differently than the classic picture most people recognize. Loud snoring and visible breathing pauses โ€” the hallmark signs most associated with airway concerns during sleep โ€” are less commonly the primary complaint in women. Instead, the more frequent presentations include persistent fatigue that does not improve with more sleep, difficulty falling or staying asleep, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes that seem to have no clear explanation.

Because these experiences overlap with many other common concerns, the breathing and airway piece is often not the first place providers look. And for many women, it is never looked at at all.

This matters because the airway and the muscles that support it during sleep- the tongue, the throat, and the soft palate, can be associated with the quality of rest the body is actually able to access, regardless of how many hours are spent in bed.

A comprehensive myofunctional assessment at Sawtooth Myofunctional Therapy looks at breathing patterns, tongue posture, and oral muscle function, not as a replacement for a sleep study or medical evaluation but as part of a whole-picture conversation about what may be contributing to how you feel when you wake up.

If this describes your mornings, that experience is worth exploring further.

If you have been managing jaw tension, facial pain, or TMD symptoms and telling yourself it is just stress, this one is worth reading.

Research consistently shows that women are diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders at significantly higher rates than men. Some studies suggest women represent up to 80 percent of those who seek care for TMD-related concerns. The reasons are not fully understood, but researchers have identified estrogen receptors in the tissues of the jaw joint, suggesting that hormonal factors may play a role in how symptoms develop, fluctuate, or present over a lifetime.

This does not mean that hormones alone explain jaw dysfunction. TMD is a complex condition influenced by multiple factors, including muscle coordination, oral posture, breathing patterns, sleep quality, and the overall function of the surrounding muscle system. But it does mean that jaw symptoms in women are not random, not imagined, and not something to push through.

Understanding what may be contributing to jaw dysfunction at a muscle and function level is where myofunctional therapy enters the conversation. Jaw Stabilization Support at Sawtooth Myofunctional Therapy looks at the whole picture: how the tongue rests, how the airway functions, how the surrounding muscles coordinate, and what patterns may be placing consistent load on the jaw joint over time.

Your jaw symptoms are worth taking seriously. And they are worth understanding more completely than "it's probably stress".

Think about your last few healthcare appointments.

Were you asked how you breathe when you are not thinking about it? Do your lips seal naturally at rest? Where does your tongue sit when your mouth is closed? Do you breathe through your nose at night, or do you wake up with a dry mouth that suggests otherwise?

For most people, the answer is no. Not because those providers were not thorough, but because these questions fall outside the scope of what they were taught to ask at most routine appointments. They belong to a specialty that most people do not encounter until something stops making sense and they start looking for a different kind of answer.

Breathing at rest. Tongue resting position. Swallowing pattern. Lip seal. These are among the first things we look at in a myofunctional assessment, because they tell us something about how the oral and airway muscles are functioning that symptoms alone cannot fully reveal.

If no one has ever asked you these questions, that is not unusual. But it may be worth noticing.

Drop your answer in the comments. Were you ever asked how you breathe at rest by anyone?

Never been asked these questions before? Send us a DM โ€” we would love to be where that conversation starts.

Allergies can trigger mouth breathing. But they are not always what keeps it going.

When nasal congestion makes it difficult to breathe through the nose, the mouth becomes the default route. That makes complete sense as a short-term adaptation. The challenge is that breathing patterns, like most patterns, can become habitual over time.

Once mouth breathing is established as the default, it can continue even when the nasal airway is clear. The muscles involved in nasal breathing may have reduced their coordination. The tongue may have settled into a lower resting position. The habit of breathing through the mouth may have become so automatic that the body no longer defaults back to nasal breathing when congestion resolves.

This cycle is particularly relevant for those who experience seasonal or chronic allergies from an early age. The pattern that begins as a response to congestion can quietly establish itself as the resting pattern, and without intervention, it often stays that way.

Addressing the allergy is one important piece. But if mouth breathing has been present for a long time, with or without current congestion, the breathing pattern itself may be worth exploring separately with a qualified provider.

If mouth breathing has persisted beyond allergy season or congestion, that pattern may be worth a closer look. Send us a message โ€” we would love to help you understand what may be contributing.
