Chairing My Adventures

Chairing My Adventures Chairing My Adventures is a Disability Travel Blog where I will share my experiences.

Chairing My Adventures was inspired by Kimberly Sims, a 20 yr old with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, who loves to travel. Through her travels, Kimberly has learned many things about the limitations people with physical disablities face and wanted to share these with others. Our mission is to educate people of ALL physical abilities of accessible travel itineraries and of the concerns those with m

obility challenges face during day to day life and while traveling. By following our page, we hope you learn what will help you with your next traveling adventure and that you find our social media posts and website informative and entertaining.

We are off on our next adventure! We are trying out a cruise on Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's newest and biggest. We're excited to see and share the improvements for those with mobility issues. (We've heard good things about the elevators!)

This spring, Kimberly and I traveled to Texas to watch a couple of shows put on by her favorite youtubers, . We had a fabulous time. What I want to share in this post is the encouragement to get out of your comfort zone and just DO! These shows were in Houston and Dallas. Pretty big cities where I have to drive downtown, find parking, trust the venues are accessible. For someone living in a rural area, these can feel daunting at times. But we just did it! I did some research of course, calling the venues, looking at maps, but mostly I just had to have faith in ourselves to make things work. It's important to know that things won't always work how you want them to and to just take the frustrations with the victories. For the final show of the SCB tour, we were in Dallas at The Deep Ellum Art Company. This had an open room with folding chairs set up in front of the stage. It worked perfectly for us. One thing I learned from this trip is to be more assertive to where Kimberly gets to sit. She has very limited movement and can't turn her head or move her body around to get a better view. If possible, she needs to be set up where she can view the stage easily. For this venue specifically, I moved some of the chairs up front to give her chair space. I did this without asking, figuring someone at the venue could let me know if I couldn't do this. I think you'll find, most places want to be accessible, they just don't think about how to make that happen until they need to. When asked, the venue also provided us with an extension cord so that we could access some outlets that were on the stage. Amazing!

The show itself was amazing. So entertaining. The Carlin Brothers are always so kind and really make it a priority to let their fans know they are appreciated. We can't wait for the next tour.

In March, we stayed at a Holiday Inn in Parkville, MO. We chose this hotel mostly because of its location. Unfortunately, there were no mobility accessible rooms available, but because the location was important to use we decide to try and make a non-accessible room work. This was only for one night so the bathroom features did not matter, we just needed the space for her powerchair. I ended up calling before I booked and this great front desk worker actually went and looked at a few of the room choices to see what would work out best for us. We chose a two queen suite and with the extra room beside the bed, it worked. Overall, this hotel was great! We would definitely stay here again!

Chairing tried something new! Broadway Rave! Tons of fun! It was at Uptown Theater in KC. They had a section designated for ADA which was actually very nice. Unfortunately it was in the back and Kim's chair still won't raise up so her view was not the best, but we still have a great time with friends!

Today, Chairing My Adventures visited a couple of wineries in the Texas Hill Country in the area of Burnet, Texas. This was Kimberly's first experience with a winery. The first venue was Torr Na Lochs Vineyard and Winery. What a great experience. It was a beautiful place and Kimberly felt very comfortable and welcomed. It was very spacious and the food was delicious! It had lovely scenic views and some longhorn cattle that came for a visit. We would go back there in a heartbeat! The second place was Perissos Vineyard and Winery. It was also a very cool place. Kimberly could get around easily and we even found an outlet to use. Chairing My Adventures gives both places two thumbs up for accessibility. I'm thinking we need to visit some wineries closer to home so we can compare! Who wants to join us?

What an awesome experience! On Tuesday, we were able to go watch the Mizzou Tigers take on the Tennessee Volunteers at the Mizzou Arena and come away with a fantastic win! These are the steps we took to ensure we had a great wheelchair experience and how the Mizzou Arena exceeded our expectations. I called the box office to order our tickets. When I explained what section we wanted to sit in, they sold me tickets to the regular seating in that section. Once we got to the stadium, we had to go to the ticket office to exchange them for ADA seating. I'm not sure why this has to be done this way, but luckily it only took a couple of minutes to accomplish. Our seats were perfect and we were happy to see an outlet so that we could plug in Kimberly's water heater! This is always a welcomed addition to any venue, but hard to find. Parking was also great. If you get there early enough, they have very close and free accessible parking. Now, unfortunately, the elevator function on Kimberly's chair is still broken, so at the end of this exciting game, the spectators standing in front of her blocked the view, but at least they had a big screen she could watch it on and the atmosphere was outstanding! If you are in a wheelchair, know that the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, MO is a great venue!
