Michelle Kan Help LPC, LLC Supporting YOU throughout your mental health journey. www.michellekanhelp.com I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Central Pennsylvania.

My focus is to help individuals meet their highest potential by creating a safe space to for them to express their thoughts and feelings as well as gain insight into their current challenges. I earned a Master of Arts in Psychological Counseling and Masters of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Teacher’s College, Columbia University as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology fro

m Pennsylvania State University. I am also bilingual in Spanish, which allows me to serve a wider range of individuals efficiently. In practice since 2008, I have extensive experience working with rural and urban populations as well as clients of all ages. I specialize in work with children, teens, and young adults by providing individual, couples, and family counseling. I am also interested in women’s issues, particularly postpartum depression. In my work with youth, I incorporate art and play therapy techniques so that unconscious emotions have an outlet when the person is not able to verbally express themselves. I believe many times, we are not quite sure how to express ourselves “correctly,” so our thoughts become “lost in translation” and relationships stagnate. My philosophy is that counseling should be flexible and strive to meet you where you are- wherever that may be. At the core, I strongly believe in Humanistic principles to guide my work though I incorporate other modalities to optimally meet your counseling goals while overcoming any barriers. I also follow a Holistic approach, in which “mind-body-spirit-emotion-environment” are key elements to interpersonal growth. The only constant in life is change- I have supported many on their journey and look forward to working with you to clear a path to the life you choose!

A little Monday motivation as we close out August.

As our home honors the transition back to school this week, I’ve been thinking about the quiet invitation of a new season—to notice again, to look with fresh eyes, to turn our attention toward what’s here.

What is asking for your attention right now?
What part of your world might look different through a fresh, hopeful lens?

(PS-And is anyone else fully in a Mary Oliver season after watching her documentary?)

Today’s ?

An authentic view of me, off the clock.

Pause.
Close your eyes.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.

When you open your eyes,
don’t hesitate—

Make the leap.

Be your Self.
Authentically.

And this week’s theme / surprise creature is…

Taking a leap of faith…

Towards your Self.

How many times this weekend…
- Did you question your intuition?
- Did you try something new?
- Did you believe in You?

Many folx stumble into counseling while experiencing a “Shadow Season.”

Despite their best efforts, they can’t seem to find the dimmer switch.
Or maybe their vision hasn’t adjusted to this season’s change.

But another one of my favorite aspects of Therapy?

Getting to explore ALL the things that make you…

*YOU*.

After all, “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.”-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

If you need some help being patient with your Self…

Advocating for You—your needs, your wants…

Reach out.

You’ve got this.
We’ve got this.

Ready to take the leap with my grasshopper?

So.

Hearing versus listening:

Hearing is a basic, singular sense. It’s automatic and passive.

Listening is a learned, active experience. It involves genuine effort—and often multiple senses.

I can hear the birds chirping outside my window.
I can hear my kids complain about the weather.
I can hear my loved one cry about their loss.

But do I listen closely enough to discern whether the bird is a mourning dove or a cardinal?

Do I listen closely enough to realize that my kids are really telling me they’re hangry?

Do I listen closely enough to hear my loved one describe the grief of loneliness—not just the physical loss?

Let’s hit PAUSE.

Take a moment.
Shoulders down.
Take a deep breath in. Hold it for four seconds.
Allow yourself to exhale for four seconds.
Repeat three times.

Now, reflect once you put your screen down:

Do I have anyone in my life who truly listens to who I am and what I need?
Maybe. Maybe not.

Do you even take the time to listen to your Self?
Maybe. Maybe not.

Regardless, therapy is here for you.

It’s your dedicated space to hit pause.
Or shout.
Or sob.
Or laugh.

Therapy is for everyone—
no matter what.

When was the last time you felt heard?

When was the last time you tuned in and listened to your Self, and the story you’re narrating?

What is the difference between hearing someone and listening to what they’re saying?

It’s so easy to get caught up in our days–
checking off lists,
running from point A to point B,
adding more achievements to unlock without always pausing to recognize what we already have.

And sometimes, feeling frustrated that no one around you is paying attention to what you’re asking for. (Or maybe, sometimes, we haven’t quite learned how to communicate clearly.)

Like when you specifically ask for, “apples and bananas”
and somehow end up with, “apples, bananas, and sugary cereal.”

They heard you– but did they listen?

Probably one of my favorite aspects of counseling?

Your therapeutic time can offer space for the in-between.

A space to sift through the noise and actively experience, what it feels like to be intentionally listened to– to recognize YOU matter, and you are more than worthy of taking up this space, to be heard.

Therapy is soft place for:

“I’m not only hearing the sounds you’re producing, but I’m here with you, listening to the story you’re still writing.”

***PAUSE***

Here is your friendly, playful reminder…

Shake your head loose.
Let your shoulders fall away from your ears.

Inhale all of today’s possibilities…
Exhale your expectations…

Take a moment today
To PAUSE

and examine your surroundings:

Is there anything playful you can
invite into your day?

Hopefully,
these bins can bring a smile.

(And a huge thank you to the amazing humans that have these!)

The Importance of Play…

As adults, we get wound up in technicalities.
And/or hustle culture.

And somewhere along the way, we forget to Play.

If anyone asks, we may be able to rattle off a few interests, or passing hobbies.

But when was the last time you specifically carved out time to *PLAY*?

I’m defining play loosely here…
Play as in engaging in an activity without hoping for– or expecting any specific outcome.

That’s right:
No one wins or loses.
No “Personal Record” to beat.
No structure.

So, how do you prefer to Play…

- Do you prefer solitary activities, like these gulls, randomly hovering on their own- flowing along to a musical instrument?

- Or do you prefer connecting with others– like this massive dolphin pod– whether it's a board game, sport, or something else entirely?

- When was the last time you let yourself throw out the lists and *flow* with your own idea of Play?

- When was the last time you could recall even feeling *playful*?

Life is too short- and too serious- to miss out on any opportunity to *Play* and just *Be*.

Monday meditations…

How do you prefer to unwind?

Maybe the better question is–

Do you allow your Self to unwind?

Do you ever allow your Self to slow down and *play*?

We recently escaped to the beach.

A lovely reminder that everything in life finds a flow.
(Whether it’s in the direction we want it to flow or not.)

Because the only constant in life is change.

And that is okay.

And if you need a reminder to slow down and play today,
as you ease back into the rhythm of another week,

Here are some super-friendly dolphins to remind you:

You matter.
You deserve space.
You deserve to slow down and play.

Celebrations-

Who gets to decide what is considered celebratory?
Or when to celebrate?
Or how?

When was the last time you celebrated your Self?’

It’s so easy to get caught up in the days.
Tending to the necessities
Tending to everyone else BUT you.

But you, too, should be-
can be,
Celebrated.

WHENEVER.

A million years ago,
I started this tradition-of-sorts.

Whenever I notice my kids slumping-
Whether it’s the endless night of Winter, when any shock of color is needed,

Or,
Week 10 of the longest summer break ever-

Every night,
I pick a word that reminds me of who my kids are.
I doodle it onto a paper heart
And tape it to their door.

Every morning,
they wake up surprised,
excited,
and carry that word with them.

A little reminder of something in themselves worth noticing.
Worth naming.
Worth celebrating.

So, here is yours::

YOU are worthy of space.
YOU deserve to be celebrated.

Not only when you accomplish something.
Not only when someone else notices.
Not only when there’s an occasion that gives you permission.

Whenever.

In what way, can you honor your Self today?

Text me today, and together, we’ll find ALL the reasons to celebrate you

08/03/2026

How do you choose to celebrate momentous occasions?

What do you do to mark the passage of a special moment– if anything?

I was minding my own business.

I had already walked my Self.
Did the things.

And decided,
"I really need to clear out this front garden. Gain some clarity. Figure out how to move forward."

After all,
"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."

And there—where I least expected it—at 1:31 on the sunniest Friday I'd seen in days...

I uncovered the sweetest reminder of Hope.

A mother had nestled her babies between my transplanted peonies, sheltered beneath the weight of the rocks that mark the edge of the garden—

At my foundation.

The first step toward Home.

Life finds a way to remind us that Hope is always around, even when we least expect it.

Celebrate the small things.
Celebrate the big things.
Or simply celebrate whatever feels worthy today.

Because sometimes,
Hope hides in the moments we almost overlook.
