Thanks to the House Aging & Older Adult Services committee and Chairwoman Rep. Maureen Madden for allowing us to speak out about the value proposition of the LIFE program in PA. As PALPA Executive Director Mike Chirieleison put it - It's all about intervention.

"From the moment that participant is picked up by the van driver, that van driver can assess whether or not it takes the participant a little extra time to get to the door or is limping. And that can be communicated to the center director. When that individual arrives at the day center, they can be directed to the physical therapist or the nurse to see, is something off? When the participant sits down for their meal, maybe they’re not eating right or how they would normally eat a meal. That is, again, an opportunity for intervention. That’s what this program is all about. It’s about intervention. It’s all about preventative services and avoiding more costly services, and that’s why it’s such a cost efficient, effective, and valuable program."

LIFE programs are the anchors of many rural communities, as Rob McQuillan, VP of Operations at One SeniorCare, which operates LIFE - NWPA pointed out at a legislative hearing earlier this week:

“When hospital systems close or community doctors retire and move out of the area, we then have the ability to step in and start to bring those services back to that community,” said McQuillan. “We’re bringing federal and state dollars to bear in rural communities to provide, or continue to provide, health care services for those individuals. “

LIFE supporters point to research suggesting that such care prevents hospitalizations and stabilizes patient conditions — that it “not only improves care, but meaningfully reduces the financial burdens in the commonwealth.”
