Pain has been demonized. Pain is protective and alerts the body if and when danger is occurring. Pain can also be amplified by emotional state and expectation of experience. When this amplification occurs though, it is not necessarily a sign that more danger is present.

Using these initial ideas, pain can be modulated downwards by controlling the systems that alert our conscious brain of pain. The first step is understanding that current discomfort does not necessarily cause long term damage. There is a common phrase in the endurance sport community- you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Modern neuroscience continues to develop the understanding of how this process occurs but it is essential for competitive sport performance to integrate these techniques to foster fortitude.

Visualization is a powerful tool not just for physical performance, but mental wellbeing and setting progressive life goals. When we’re a learning a skill or mentally rehearsing a race, job interview or presentation, parts of the brain are activating as if we were doing that skill! Just as we run everyday or plan to do strength training 3x a week, visualization needs to be polished and practiced for months to start seeing results.

Here is a short exercise that you can do today:
Imagine your ideal self at work or as an athlete. Then, list out some of the personality traits, actions, and values that version of yourself has. By defining who we want to be we can work backwards in defining steps and create habits that will get us to where we want to be.

Individual variability is a well known and expected measure in the sports and performance world. It is game changing when something so subjective as performance can be measured quantitatively such as with a time or degree. These measures allow us improved clarity on how to best enhance our performances.

According to the article "Lower step rate is associated with a higher risk of bone stress injury: a prospective study of collegiate cross country runners" by Kliethermes et al. cadence during running is one of these direct measures of feedback. Conscious development of form and cadence are associated with a decrease in risk of injury and should be implemented to keep moving forward healthily and consistently.

Take a deep breath in.
We are constantly bombarded by information which our body perceives as a threat. Our brains were designed to perceives these threats (whether it is a tiger or a text message) and to go into a state of fight, flight, or freeze.
Let your breath out.
However, living in a digital world it can be difficult to manage this feeling of “wired and tired” where we may be safe in our own homes yet exhausted and unable to relax.

There are a few ways to try and “reset” our nervous system through mental cues paired with breathwork. Awareness is the first step in getting there. Several times today take a moment and be aware- take a breath in and notice what’s going on internally. What thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations occur when you think about stressful and relaxing environments and situations? Breathe out and be on your way.

As seasons shift and the days roll by it is important to take a moment to always consider for what you are most grateful. The way we may see the world and the goals we set can potentially block from our sights what we appreciate the most. This might be a great run, a warm text from a friend or family member, or even a simple cup of coffee or tea! Gratitude is a form of mindfulness as it forces you to seek out positive experiences throughout the day and, with practice, enjoy them in the moment. Allowing days to simply roll by without reflection limits the impact of each important moment.

Take a moment to consider: what are you grateful for? Post a picture of what you are grateful for and tag us at . Then take a moment to appreciate the community around you and reach out to someone who affects you positively. We’re grateful for the growing community of people who have wanted to improve their wellbeing and physical health and joined us here at Startline, the beauty of nature, and the best of days with the ones we love.

In which direction do I head?

Goal design should be a process-driven practice. Goals are both the end result and the skills or techniques that are learned throughout the journey to that end result. The process is just as important. This process can be honed and it is done so through intentional actions. Goal selection should never be limited in scope by the question at the start of this post.

How do I proceed in the direction I've selected?
What tools will be progress me in this direction?
Why am I driven in this direction?

These are the questions that must be asked consistently for any goal to be met.

Balance is the essential foundation upon which progress is made. Time to recover, time to prioritize, and time to diversify are each needed to keep moving forward.

Keep the process simple: consistency, progression, specificity. Keep moving forward.
