Pain has been demonized. Pain is protective and alerts the body if and when danger is occurring. Pain can also be amplified by emotional state and expectation of experience. When this amplification occurs though, it is not necessarily a sign that more danger is present.
Using these initial ideas, pain can be modulated downwards by controlling the systems that alert our conscious brain of pain. The first step is understanding that current discomfort does not necessarily cause long term damage. There is a common phrase in the endurance sport community- you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Modern neuroscience continues to develop the understanding of how this process occurs but it is essential for competitive sport performance to integrate these techniques to foster fortitude.
