DMY: David Moscowitz Yoga My practice is a blend and balance of routine and experiment, meditation and body awareness, silence and music, motion and stillness.

When someone asks me how long I have practiced yoga, it is an easy answer since my first class was at 8 a.m. on an icy Saturday morning in Indianapolis a few weeks before my son was born over a decade ago. The more that I do yoga, though, the more it feels that I’ve practiced it for much longer. From breathwork as response to my asthma to physical therapy as response to my flat feet, I have come t

o learn and preach that yoga is simply about sitting with ourselves—mind and body—and breathing, observing, listening, and remembering that the word practice should not be underestimated. My practice is a blend and balance of routine and experiment, meditation and body awareness, silence and music. I did my 200 hour CYT in mindful vinyasa at Mission Yoga in Charleston and am eternally grateful for the warmth and welcome that space provides whenever I return. Other loves of mine include food, film, tea, the water, hiking, slam poetry, music of many kinds, and any travel I can get with my super cute family.

Both suffering and happiness are of an organic nature, which means they are both transitory; they are always changing. The flower, when it wilts, becomes the compost. The compost can help grow a flower again. — Thích Nhất Hạnh

This month marks twenty years since my first yoga class at Invoke Studio in Indianapolis with Sarah (I wish I could remember her last name!). Yoga has given me so much and I am beyond grateful for its teachings. Life is large. Love fuels this world. Sit well and breathe.

She speaks slowly
with a voice like moss,
soft, deep and damp.
If you’re not listening carefully
you might just miss it,
rising out from the earth
like vapour,
gently tugging at your ankles.
“Rest” she says,
“Deeper. Rest as deep as I am.
You are moving too fast.
Become soil,
become the slow-growing tree.
Send your roots deep
into the rich darkness
where they can truly be nourished.
Winter is sanctuary
and you are weary.
Come drink of my stillness
and dream in the dark earth.”
“Rest” by Emily Pearce
