Balanced Divers

Balanced Divers Balanced Divers is a private diving instructional organization that embodies a personable, professional and eclectic approach. Dive and live with balance!

What do you want to get out of diving? Are you looking to get certified for the first time? Or do you want to take your diving to the next level by becoming an instructor or technical diver? As a "Balanced Diver," we believe in strong fundamentals, critical thinking, team awareness and standardized procedures that will carry you through whatever your diving goals are. Our ethos emphasizes the need

to be balanced in the water column (good buoyancy and trim), balanced mentally (creating the three spheres of awareness for exceptional team dynamics), and balanced physically (living a healthy lifestyle). Balanced Divers represents the private SCUBA instruction of Tyler Phelps and an "ohana" that share these philosophies, wanting to take their diving to the next level. Please be on the look-out for the official website (to be debuted soon) with a comprehensive list of all courses offered, videos, pictures, research projects and more! Mahalo for your interest and support of BD!

Unlike the media portrays sometimes, as divers it’s a real treat to get up close with sharks. On this dive we were visited by stunning 10-18ft female tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier)! Swipe left to see their amazing coloration. However these beautiful sharks and other species are in jeopardy to the shark finning industry. While it’s illegal to fin sharks in the US, it’s not illegal to import and re-export. Help sign and share this petition to support HR 1456, the federal Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act.

My growth as a writer would not have been amplified without continuously writing with Seawords for the past 2 years. Working with the editorial staff really refined my style and technique. After ~30 published articles, I wanted to crescendo with this ultimate comprehensive travel guide, a topic I'm frequently asked about. Please enjoy and share this terrific summer edition of Seawords! Be sure to subscribe to the mailing list for future issues! While I will be starting grad school next month, I'm sure it won't be long before I'm pulled from retirement for another article or two ;).

This is one of Tyler's favorite articles he's ever written. It's something ALL of us "advanced" divers and professionals need to have. The good ol' ego check ;). In honor of April, we highly recommend all of my dive friends to read my latest piece, "Don't Be a Fool" (pgs 10-13), and have an honest conversation with yourself. Kudos to Jenny and the rest of the Seawords team for another beautiful issue! https://issuu.com/seawords/docs/april_2018_final_layout

My new article is out in the March issue of Seawords and you don't want to miss this one! On page 14 I offer my interpretations and lessons learned from the most recent data from DAN's comprehensive 2017 Annual Diving Report on diver accidents and fatalities. I strongly encourage all divers to view this report for free on DAN.org. Special thanks for Dr. Peter Buzzacott and Dr. Virginia Papadopoulou for early access to the report and insight to their research! Congratulations to the Seawords staff and fellow writers for another great issue!

In the spirit of "National Single Awareness Day," please enjoy my latest article, "Finding the Perfect Dive Buddy" in the February issue of Seawords. Just because you get a long together on land, doesn't mean they may make the best companion underwater. In this article on page 8 I discuss some of the qualities and characteristics every dive buddy should have!

It’s important to recognize the signs of diver panic, equipment rejection being the most severe. What could the responder have done differently?

A few of us divers got separated from group and decided that we should ascend. Inability to ascend caused one diver to panic... I am not a dive instructor......
