👂 October is National Audiology Awareness Month
Hearing health is an important part of overall health, yet hearing loss can develop gradually and may go unnoticed for years.
Here are a few facts worth knowing:
🔹 Hearing loss can occur at any age. Aging, noise exposure, certain medications, illness, injury, and other factors can contribute to hearing changes.
🔹 Difficulty hearing in background noise is a common early sign. Other signs include frequently asking people to repeat themselves, turning up the television, difficulty understanding speech on the phone, or noticing that sounds seem muffled.
🔹 Noise exposure can cause permanent hearing damage. Repeated exposure to loud sounds—or even a single very loud sound close to the ear—can contribute to noise-induced hearing loss.
🔹 Hearing loss is not simply an inevitable part of getting older. While hearing loss becomes more common with age, it should still be evaluated and managed appropriately.
🔹 An audiologist does more than fit hearing aids. Audiologists evaluate, diagnose, and manage hearing and balance disorders and can help determine whether hearing technology, medical referral, rehabilitation, hearing protection, or another approach is appropriate.
🔹 A hearing evaluation provides information—not an obligation to purchase hearing aids. Understanding your hearing is an important first step in making informed decisions about your care.
This month, take a moment to think about your hearing.
If you or someone you love is frequently saying “What?”, struggling to follow conversations in restaurants, or turning the TV up louder than everyone else, it may be time for a hearing evaluation.
💙 Your hearing is worth paying attention to.
