**The Hidden Pain: Gastric Ulcers in Horses**
Your horse may look healthy on the outside, but what if they're silently struggling on the inside?
Gastric ulcers are one of the most common health concerns in horses, affecting performance horses, trail horses, pasture pets, and even seemingly low-stress horses. Unfortunately, many horses don't show obvious signs until the ulcers have become more advanced.
Some horses may experience:
▪️ Changes in attitude or behavior
▪️ Decreased performance
▪️ Weight loss or difficulty maintaining condition
▪️ Girthiness or sensitivity when tacking up
▪️ Picky eating or reduced appetite
▪️ Increased stress or irritability
Because these signs can be subtle, ulcers are often overlooked or mistaken for training, behavioral, or other health issues.
Throughout this month, we'll be taking a closer look at gastric ulcers, including common signs, risk factors, prevention strategies, and ways to support horses affected by them.
The more we understand what's happening beneath the surface, the better we can advocate for the health and comfort of our horses. ❤️
