Learn how home modifications can help kupuna age in place and live comfortably in their own homes at a free webinar on Wednesday, March 30 at 10 a.m.

An AARP survey of older Oahu residents found most like the communities in which they live and nearly 80 percent -- four out of five – want to remain in their own homes as they age. Not surprisingly, many home and apartment owners age 45 and older say they will have to remodel their homes to allow them to continue living there, with bathrooms (41 percent) being the most common home modification.

The Home Modifications for Aging in Place webinar will include information on simple fixes that homeowners can do themselves as well as modifications that involve hiring professionals. Experts will also explain a new effort to make home modification consultations available to rural communities by telehealth services.

Thrive for Life, LLC, in partnership with the University of Southern California Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, is looking for volunteers to participate in a research study to help connect rural older adults to services that increase safety and support in the home for independence.

We are seeking adults age 65 and over who have used telehealth in the last six months to participate in a 1-hour phone interview about their experiences with technology. Names and contact information will be kept private, and participants will receive a $5 gift card after the interview. We are thrilled to announce that we recently partnered with the University of Southern California’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology to be awarded a Small Business Innovation Research grant by the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living, Rehabilitation and Research.

As part of this grant, we will create a remote home assessment to increase access to home modifications for rural older adults with disabilities. The project, Home Mod Connection, is something that we plan to roll out to our mentorship students in the future. We are very happy that we can develop this valuable asset and support those in need of home modifications beyond our geographic boundaries.

The Letter of Medical Necessity is a potent tool. It is a LEGAL document wherein your doctor argues why you need a specific medical treatment or test.

If you rent your home but also need to install an accessible home modification because of an injury or illness, you are protected by the Fair Housing Act. It protects individuals with disabilities, so you are entitled to install the home modifications you need (at your own expense).

However, the landlord can require you to remove the modification at your own expense when you move out.
