Summer is a time when young people are home more and may be less supervised. Take time to talk to young people about medication and substance safety, and lock up any medications, cannabis products, and alcohol that young people do not need to have access to.

Studies show that while men experience mental health problems at similar rates as women, they are less likely to seek help. If you’re a man experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to handle it alone. Reaching out to a friend, family member, or a mental health professional is a sign of strength — not weakness. And if you care about a man in your life, check in. Start a conversation. Let him know you’re there to listen without judgment. Sometimes a simple “How are you really doing?” can make a difference. Some concerns require professional support, and it’s okay to seek help. Support is available, and talking about mental health can save lives. If you are in immediate distress or are thinking about hurting yourself, call or text the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org For more information on topics related to mental health for men, visit https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/men-and-mental-health

During Men’s Health Week, take a moment to focus on the mental health of the men in your life. Social norms often discourage men from expressing their emotions, which can increase their risk of depression, overdose, and su***de. Many men may not seek help because they’ve been taught to "be strong" and suppress their feelings. Support the men around you by encouraging them to build healthy mental habits: foster social connections, engage in hobbies, get regular exercise, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, and consider regular counseling sessions.
