August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and the conversation almost always focuses on children. But adult vaccines are where the real gap is.
If you are over 50, there are vaccines you are likely missing and no one has told you about. Shingrix for shingles, the updated pneumonia vaccine, the RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older, high-dose flu starting at 65, and a Tdap booster are all on the recommended schedule for older adults. Most people have not received them.
The problem is not hesitancy. It is that these conversations do not happen automatically. Your doctor may assume someone else told you. Your pharmacist may not bring it up unless you ask.
This week, ask your pharmacist to check your immunization records. Most states have a registry. It takes a few minutes and closes a real gap.
Shared for educational awareness only. Medical decisions should always be made in consultation with your physician or healthcare team.
