There are so many opportunities for facilitating language in our everyday lives.

You can work on language skills during all of your daily routines-even one as simple as bath time! Bath time was one of my favorite activities with my children! Since it is a part of the bedtime routine, it’s a great way to incorporate speech and language. It provides repetition of words/phrases and gives them more opportunities to practice the language their learning.

At On A Mission Speech and Language Therapy, LLC one of our main goals is to empower caregivers to help them build their child’s speech and language skills. Caregivers spend the most time with their children so they have the most opportunities to provide a language rich environment. We are here to help. Link in bio for a free consultation!

Cooking dinner? Let your child join in! Since cooking is a part of your daily routine it’s a great time to incorporate speech and language.

*It provides repetition of words/phrases and gives your child more opportunities to practice the language they are learning.

*It gives your child an opportunity to learn a functional skill and use their fine motor skills.

*It gives your child more exposure to foods instead of just at meal time. The more they engage food with other senses the better. This is especially true for children who are picky eaters.

Happy Tuesday! This week’s tip is all about being animated when playing with your child. The more excited, silly or fun you can be when interacting with them -the better!
Some examples below:

⭐️when playing with toys exaggerate facial expressions and exclamatory sounds ( ex: Wow! Ouch! Oh no! )

⭐️while reading to your child change voices for different characters.

⭐️put objects on top of your head like a cup and pretend to sneeze and let it fall. ( Little ones think it’s hilarious)

Tell me in the comments what silly things you do with your children!

Communication is so much more than just asking for things. For our AAC users, focusing solely on requesting can limit their expressive abilities and hinder true communicative competence. Think about it: we comment, question, protest, share information, express feelings, and build relationships all through communication! By teaching and modeling a variety of communication functions, we empower our AAC users to:
* Engage in richer social interactions: Beyond just getting needs met, they can truly connect with others.
* Express their unique personalities: They can share opinions, tell jokes, and show their individuality.
* Become active participants in their world: They can comment on what they see, ask for clarification, and direct others.
* Develop a deeper understanding of language: They learn how language is used for different purposes.
Let’s champion a holistic approach to AAC intervention, focusing on the diverse and dynamic ways we communicate. What are your favorite ways to target various communication functions with your AAC users? Share your ideas below!

Core words are the building blocks of language – the high-frequency words we use most often in our daily communication, like “want,” “go,” “more,” and “help.” Focusing on core words supports overall language development, including syntax and grammar, as users learn to combine words meaningfully.
