-- had a lot of surgeries?? addicted to opioids from the hospital or the doctors? Please read this --
I had just turned 16 upon my diagnosis of Crohn's Disease, and back then they still used Demerol as the thinking was since it was a different kind of opioid, the addiction rate in patients compared to morphine would be significantly lower. Well, as we know today, it had the opposite effect on the patients for whom it was prescribed. Especially the intravenous sort. I was in the hospital 8 wks and 8 wks I was on the Demerol. Part of that time, after my small bowel resection, I was out on a PCA Pump, where I controlled how much medicine I was getting. I was A 16 year old stuck in the hospital over the holidays. Of course I used more than I needed. By that time it was way too late anyway. I was already so addicted that the morphine they tried to switch me to after the surgery had 0 effect.
By the time I was 17, two years after diagnosis, I was using fentanyl patches and subbucal formulations.
I'm now 32 and even though I am off the oxycontin, Vicodin, Demerol, fentanyl and morphine capsules, I still have to take ____ for my chronic pain, most of which stems from my post operatives. I stopped counting at around 25. Mostly anal/rectal fistulae with a couple partial colectomies and sm. Bowel resections.
I'm in the process of radically altering my diet and promoting gut flora...I meditate daily, spend sometimes damn near entire days at the park with my best friend..my border collie, and despite what I have been thru, and the sacrifices Ive had to make (no drinking, strict anti-inflammatory diet, infusions every couple of weeks, and having my personality altered) to name a few, I'm a generally happy guy who lives a pretty normal life. I just have a hell of a lot of good stories to tell ðĪŠðĪðē
I'm sharing this not for pitty but with the hopes that someone with a similar story will share theirs... And of course tag me in it ð..
