Our mission is to build a multigenerational network of restorative justice practitioners who strengthen community ties, promote healing, and offer non-punitive approaches to harm repair in Houston and beyond. Through collaboration between stakeholders in schools and prisons – with a particular focus on including the voices of students and parents from the community – RJCH will plan conferences, lo

bby for the implementation of restorative justice in the juvenile justice and education system in the greater Houston area, and conduct circle trainings for current and preservice teachers, administrators, students, and parents interested in bringing a new model of justice to their school or institution.

Jacora is a future legislator who inspires us regularly. She is a reminder of why our Circles are essential spaces for political education, emotional intelligence, identity development and embracement, and social skills. Read her testimonial to learn more.

Step one of our training is earning a Certificate of Participation after 22 hours of in-person and online learning.

Step two is where it comes alive—apprentices take the scripts they’ve written and step into the role of Circle Keeper, facilitating a full circle from opening to closing, including debrief.

Throughout the journey, every participant receives hands-on coaching, reflection, and support.

This weekend we celebrated our first graduation for fully apprenticed Circle Keepers in a hilariously chaotic ceremony as a group of goofy misfits that are passionate about their communities. We asked them what they are most looking forward to doing with their new skill set & experience & you can listen to a few of their answers at the end of this thread. We are so incredibly proud of every one of our incredible apprenticed graduates & can’t wait to watch & partner with them as they make an impact in our world.

For those who could not make it, we will see you at the next one in three months!

You know it but do you live it?

One of many valuable things our apprentices learn in our Apprenticeship program is to actually experience the process of being in community and building it within their cohort.

The RJ field can often become yet another “power over” experience even though it goes against the very core principle of what RJ is.

That’s why it’s important to us to make sure our apprentices are getting to experience being circle participants in every session where they have the opportunity to open up, practice vulnerability & connection for themselves. This not only challenges them to go into a level playing field with the other cohort members regardless of their role, status or education level outside of circle, but they also get to experience the deep healing benefits circle brings & the authentic connection they help facilitate.

Things like restorative justice can become an intellectual exercise if we’re not intentional about putting it into practice in our own lives.

Thank you to our freshly graduated fully apprenticed cohort member who is a doctoral candidate & educator for articulating this so well! We’re so proud of him & excited to see the impact he will continue to make with these skills! We’re so grateful for you Evan!

If you’re interested in doing our Fall apprenticeship program the deadline to apply is May 22nd! Link in comments!

Our Joy as Ritual circle was absolutely everything we hoped for and more. We can’t thank and .studio enough for partnering with us to make this beautiful community quality time happen within such a beautiful exhibit in a beautiful community focused art studio in the heart of our city. Ya’ll HAVE TO go check out this exhibit in person ya’ll!

It was so special to be in a space that is a literal expression of everything that makes community what it is: a home, an altar, a tree of connections that bear so much fruit in our lives.

This circle reminded us that care is not just about holding the heavy things—it’s also about making space for joy.
Joy is not a distraction from the work.
It is what makes the work possible.

Thank you to everyone for bringing the delicious food!! Especially because that pork really HIT THE SPOT! So sad I didn’t get any pictures of the food!

Our hope is that people left remembering that joy is something we can practice, protect, and share—together.

Our apprenticeship keeps getting stronger with every cohort.

We’re continuously refining it to ensure participants leave feeling fully confident facilitating circles in their own communities.

This is not surface-level learning. This isn’t just about learning concepts.
It’s about developing the awareness, skills, and discernment needed to facilitate with care and integrity.

If you’ve been feeling called to build community, hold space, and bring restorative practices into your own circles of influence—this is your invitation.

Applications are now open! Deadline to apply is May 22nd. Link to apply in our bio!

Let’s talk about it. Accountability is something many people are intimidated by and has been weaponized in many spaces, AND it is important to untangle it from the toxic ways it has been used and reframe it via a restorative approach.

Accountability can and should be an empowering process to cultivate a safe, healthy environment that produces character growth, transformation & authentic safety within relationships & community.

It is an integral part of achieving & sustaining restorative justice.

DID YOU KNOW? Texas has a Victim Offender Mediation Dialogue (VOMD) Program!

We went to the Human Trafficking Coalition in Waco where one of our apprentices who is also a volunteer mediator for the TDCJ Victim Offender Dialogue program, Cheryl Miller, talk about one of many stories of how these dialogues can bring tremendous healing & freedom to both parties.

This program is rooted in restorative justice and is available in Texas for all victims or surviving family members of violent crimes.

The more we share and amplify restorative justice practices, the more they can be supported, adopted, and brought to life where they’re needed most.

Today we had the privilege of circling with The Forgotten Third.

The Forgotten Third Inc. (TFT) is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to reduce gun violence and crime among youth in underserved Harris County communities. Through mentorship, education, employment, and reentry support—grounded in trauma-informed care—they’ve achieved an impressive 7.5% recidivism rate among participants.

Deep gratitude to restorative practitioners Unique Simmons, Deshandrea Yates, and youth board member Amiyah Yates for holding a powerful and heartfelt circle on “adulting.”

We’re excited to be building toward a collaboration with The Forgotten Third to develop a restorative diversion program, informed by what we’ve both learned through the Common Justice Practitioners Lab.

More to come—stay tuned.
