A patient came in ready to give up on hearing aids entirely. He'd spent real money elsewhere and still couldn't understand his own grandchildren. Turns out nobody had ever actually verified his devices were fitted to his ears specifically, they were programmed to a general average instead.
Two weeks after we fixed that, he called to tell me he'd just heard his grandson explain his whole day at school. Clearly. For the first time in years.
