I think one of the biggest problems in the horse industry is that people wait until something goes wrong before they start paying attention.

The horse loses weight.
Stops performing.
Gets sore.
Gets ulcers.
Starts acting β€œbehavioral.”

Then everyone rushes to fix the problem.

But the best horsemen I know are not constantly reacting.
They are observing.

They notice the little things before they become big things.

A slightly dull coat.
A horse not finishing water.
One hind leg filling a little more than normal.
A change in expression.
A different feeling in the contact.

The horses are talking to us all the time.

The question is whether we are busy managing them… or actually listening to them.

I honestly think great horsemanship has less to do with having some magical talent and more to do with learning how to slow down enough to notice details other people miss.

The best riders I know are usually incredible observers first.

Curious what everyone else thinks β€”

What is one small thing you noticed early that ended up preventing a much bigger problem later on? Or a hindsight 20/20 moment that you learned from. Let’s help each other notice these issues before they become big problems.

yes! Rehab or training, recognizing this is important (for the rider too, who can also get fatigued when learning new things).

honestly the same for bodywork! the most effective changes can happen in 30 mins, if you’re working for 2+ hrs the horse has checked out some time ago

Do you know what signs your horse gives you when they are tired?

Fatigue can be mis-interpreted as β€˜bad’ behaviour or loss of concentration/focus e.g. spookiness.

Make sure you take note of these subtle clues and rest for enough time to recover which could be 2 minutes, 10 minutes, a hour, or a day.

Update from Texas: The AOPP attended the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners' recent webinar on alternative therapies. We've posted a full recap of what was covered, but the key takeaway is this:

The rules requiring veterinary supervision for services like PEMF have been in place for years, and the board does not have the authority to change that; only the Texas Legislature can change the statute.

That means it's up to us to organize.

Read the full recap, the legal breakdown, and how you can get involved to help support the next steps for our community. πŸ‘‡
