New Beginnings & Freedom: A Juneteenth Reflection

Starting something new can be exciting.

It can also be scary.

Whether it’s a new business, a new career path, a new season of life, or a new vision God has placed in your heart, stepping into the unknown requires faith.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we’re reminded that freedom is more than a historical event—it’s also a mindset.

Freedom to grow.

Freedom to heal.

Freedom to dream.

Freedom to become who God created you to be.

Too often, we stay stuck because of fear, self-doubt, past mistakes, or the opinions of others.

But freedom means giving yourself permission to move forward.

To learn.

To build.

To start again if necessary.

At A&W Counseling, we believe healing and growth go hand in hand.

Sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes when you stop asking, “What if I fail?” and start asking, “What if God is preparing me for something greater?”

As we honor Juneteenth, let’s also celebrate the freedom to pursue purpose, healing, and the vision God has placed inside of us.

Your next chapter may be waiting on the other side of one courageous step.

🙏 From Self-Blame to Healing

For years, you blamed yourself for things that were never your fault.

As a teenager, you experienced abuse from your father.

He was physically present, but emotionally absent.

He was in the home, but the love, protection, affirmation, and guidance you needed were often missing.

And like many young people carrying wounds they didn’t understand, you began to internalize the pain.

You questioned your worth.

You questioned your value.

You wondered if somehow you were the problem.

Those wounds didn’t disappear when you became an adult.

They followed you.

And when life brought new challenges—including being separated from your own children and unable to be the father you desired to be—the self-blame returned.

The shame resurfaced.

The questions came back.

But God began to reveal a truth that changed everything:

What happened to you was not your fault.

You were never responsible for the abuse you endured.

You were never responsible for the emotional void left by someone who should have nurtured you.

And your past was never meant to define your future.

Through faith, prayer, healing, and God’s grace, you learned to release burdens that never belonged to you.

You learned that your worth is not determined by how you were treated.

Your identity is not rooted in rejection.

Your identity is rooted in Christ.

Today, you choose healing over bitterness.

Purpose over pain.

Faith over self-blame.

Your story is not about what broke you.

It’s about how God sustained you.

It’s about how He carried you through trauma, disappointment, and heartbreak—and still gave your life purpose.

If you’re reading this and carrying the weight of childhood abuse, emotional neglect, or father wounds, hear this:

What happened to you is not who you are.

Your pain may be part of your story, but it does not get the final chapter.

God does.

🙏 For God’s Glory: My Testimony

There was a time in my life when I could have become another statistic.

I survived gun violence.

I survived murder attempts.

I survived situations that should have taken me out.

But God had other plans.

Looking back, I realize it wasn’t luck.

It was God’s grace.

When the enemy tried to destroy me, God protected me.

When fear tried to overwhelm me, God strengthened me.

When I didn’t understand why I was still here, God revealed that my life still had purpose.

My testimony isn’t about what happened to me.

It’s about what God brought me through.

Every scar tells a story.

Every challenge became a lesson.

Every obstacle became an opportunity for God to show His power.

Today, I share my story not for sympathy, but for God’s glory.

Because if God can bring me through what I faced, He can bring you through what you’re facing.

No matter how dark it looks.

No matter how impossible it feels.

No matter what the odds say.

God still has the final word.

Keep believing.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting.

Your story isn’t over.

“Strong men ask for help when they need it.”

For too long, many men have been taught:

“Handle it yourself.”

“Don’t show weakness.”

“Keep pushing through.”

So they carry it.

The stress.
The pressure.
The anxiety.
The frustration.
The pain no one else sees.

They keep showing up for everyone else while silently struggling themselves.

But strength isn’t pretending everything is okay.

Strength is recognizing when you’re overwhelmed.

Strength is being honest about what you’re carrying.

Strength is taking the steps necessary to protect your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s change the conversation.

Seeking support doesn’t make you weak.

It makes you self-aware.

It makes you intentional.

It makes you strong.

If you’ve been carrying more than you should, know this:

You don’t have to do it alone.

Imposter syndrome…

Looks like confidence on the outside—
but doubt on the inside.

You’re doing the work.
Showing up.
Making progress.

But in your mind…

“I’m not ready.”
“I don’t deserve this.”
“They’re going to figure me out.”

So instead of owning your growth…

You question it.

Downplay it.
Second-guess it.
Compare yourself to everyone else.

But here’s the truth—

You didn’t get here by accident.

Your skills are real.
Your growth is real.
Your progress is earned.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t mean
you don’t belong…

It usually shows up
right when you’re stepping into something bigger.

That’s not a sign to shrink—

That’s a sign to grow into it.

You’re not behind.
You’re not a fraud.

You’re developing.

Sometimes it’s not anger…

It’s disappointment
that’s been repeated too many times.

Letting people in…
and being let down.

Trusting…
and feeling overlooked.

Showing up…
and not getting the same in return.

Over time…

Something shifts.

You stop expecting much.
You become guarded.
Your tone changes.
Your patience gets shorter.

Not because you’re difficult—

But because you’ve learned
to protect yourself.

That’s where defensive hostility
and cynicism come from.

It’s not just attitude…

It’s built-up hurt
that never got processed.

But here’s the truth—

Staying guarded might protect you…

But it can also block
the very connection you still want.

That’s where the work begins.

Learning how to:

Process the disappointment.
Lower the defense when it’s safe.
And respond differently
without losing yourself.

You’re not “too much”—

You’ve just been through enough.
