Overcome Yours

Overcome Yours Motivational movement founded by Garrett Brumfield: an overcomer of Cerebral Palsy

We ALL have obstacles…How will you overcome yours?

I want to personally welcome you to the Overcome Yours movement. Overcome Yours is dedicated to empowering others to overcome their obstacles no matter what they may be. Having been born with Cerebral Palsy, I've had a lot of trying times, but I've also had many successes. I've had people look down on me, but I've also had people believe in me. I've had people turn their back on me, but I've also

had people stand beside me when I needed them most. My point is that, through it all, I'm still here and I'm still fighting. Sure there have been times when I wanted to give up, but you know what...I didn't! The truth is, we are all faced with obstacles, some of which may make us feel alone, but I'm here to tell you that you're not alone. Sure, your circumstances may make you feel a little different, but that's okay. Being different is what makes us all unique. Trust me, the world would be a boring place if we were al the same. The movement isn't solely about me, it's about all of us. It's about coming together, and helping each other by sharing experiences. As you follow this movement, you will hear many of my experiences from birth to now and everything in between. It is my hope that after hearing my stories, you will be encouraged to share your stories as well, so that you too can be an encouragement to others. As I've said before, we all have obstacles. Some may be bigger than others, but I firmly believe that you can overcome any obstacle with a little hard work the right attitude. I'm overcoming mine, how will you overcome yours?

Join us tomorrow at 2pm EST!

Tomorrow is the last part of the Power in Pride Celebration for Disability Pride Month, and of course we’ve saved the best for last with “Trauma Healing From The Ableist Society” ✨

Living disabled in an ableist society comes with a lot of trauma that often gets minimized and invalidated. I’ll be joined by my friends Nicole Demos (), Lisa Lawrence and Garrett Brumfield () for a conversation that validates that pain, and empowers disability pride 🖤

Join us tomorrow at 2 PM on my page Art Activism by Marie D.L. and help us close out the month in community!

ID: a hand drawn illustration of two zombies working together to hold up a brown protest sign; one has magenta skin dripping off its bumpy bones and the other has turquoise. The sign has the words “The Power in Pride Celebration for Disability Pride Month Trauma Healing From The Ableist Society with…” above 4 round headshots “tacked” on to the sign, from left to right: Nicole Demos, Marie Dagenais-Lewis, Lisa Lawrence, and Garrett Brumfield. Below the pictures is more white text that reads “July 29th @ 2 PM ET/11 AM PST on the Art Activism by Marie D.L. page. RSVP at https://bit.ly/PIPC4DPM9”. In the black gap below the sign are more words which say “live transcription available; created by .a.r.e.advoc8” above Marie’s signature.

Recently I was scootin’ with my pup around the neighborhood when we passed by a local restaurant and a kid knocked on the glass and started waving. I waved back but figured he was just admiring my pup (as many passerbys do.) As I went around the corner, the boy and his mom come running after me. He shows me a cast on his arm and quickly exclaims, “I have a disability too.” His mom spoke up and said, “He has Cerebral Palsy.” The boy’s eye lit up when I told him I have CP too. We talked about similarities and I gave him a few pointers to hopefully help him throughout elementary and beyond. His mom told me they were in town to see a specialist and unfamiliar with the area, but they were glad our paths crossed.

My puppy, Hudson, has helped me meet many awesome people, but that interaction was a favorite and one I’ll never forget.

Being proud of my disability is something I struggled with greatly growing up, but once my mindset shifted in my early 20’s, I discovered a new passion and my true calling!

Many thanks to Leanna Scachetti WDBJ7 for including me and this movement in her story for !

July is Disability Pride Month, a time for calling attention to challenges the disabled community still faces, while celebrating their successes.
