A new BMJ Paediatrics Open study (45,754 PIVCs) just delivered compelling results about the value of cyanoacrylate adhesive securement. SecurePortIV® adhesive was associated with significantly lower phlebitis rates (3.8% vs 13.4% with splint-only securement), longer catheter dwell times, and no increase in infiltration, extravasation, or skin-related adverse events. When combined with splinting, it reduced the risk of catheter dislodgement by 45%.

These findings add to the growing body of evidence supporting adhesive-based securement as a safe, effective strategy for improving vascular access outcomes in vulnerable neonatal patients.

The British Association of Perinatal Medicine's new Use of Central Venous Access Devices in Neonatal Units framework emphasizes a standardized, evidence-based approach to CVAD insertion, maintenance, imaging, and securement to improve outcomes for neonatal patients.

One key takeaway is the recognition of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (glue) as a valuable component of catheter securement best practice, helping to:
👣 Secure UVCs: secure umbilical venous catheters (UVCs) without fixing the catheter to the abdominal wall.
👣 Reduce complications: cyanoacrylate glue at the insertion site of PICCs and CICCs can reduce complications, specifically Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and catheter dislodgement.
👣 Prevent complication: cyanoacrylate glue can help reduce catheter migration and dislodgement, reinforcing its role in maintaining device stability.

SecurePortIV® Catheter Securement Adhesive supports these best-practice goals by providing immediate catheter stabilization and insertion-site protection, helping neonatal teams protect every line, every time.

Sometimes innovation is sparked by simple, creative thinking at the bedside.

At APIC 2026, the team from Winnie Palmer Hospital showcased a standout poster demonstrating how an unconventional approach using plastic “tacos” and cyanoacrylate adhesive helped drive meaningful reductions in CLABSI (Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections) in their NICU.

This project is a great reminder that:
- Innovation doesn’t have to be expensive
- The best ideas often come from the clinicians closest to the problem
- Creative solutions can have life-saving impacts

Kudos to the Winnie Palmer team for thinking outside the box (or taco! 🌮) and advancing safer care for our tiniest patients.

Did you know that device dislodgement isn’t just inconvenient? It can increase the risk of complications and infection. As vascular access volumes grow, infection prevention strategies increasingly include more reliable, high-performance adhesive securement solutions like SecurePortIV® adhesive.

Designed to deliver consistent stability at the insertion site, SecurePortIV® adhesive helps minimize the risk of catheter movement and dislodgement, supporting better adherence and securement integrity over time.

Stability matters. Outcomes depend on it.
