Stop Fighting Your Body—Start Stewarding It
Stop fighting your body and its ailments. Steward your body. Your body isn’t something to constantly battle, punish, or override. It is something to listen to, care for, nourish, strengthen, and steward well.
Here are some simple places to start:
1. Eat accordingly.
Eat seasonally. Eat organically when possible. Eat whole, nourishing foods. Eat with moderation and intention. Learn to recognize what foods leave your body energized and what foods leave it struggling or needing something else.
2. Hydrate.
Hydration isn’t just about thirst. Your body depends on adequate fluids for circulation, digestion, temperature regulation, cellular function, and countless other processes. Choose water more often than sugary drinks, sodas, and highly sweetened beverages. Read your labels and pay attention to what you’re actually putting into your body.
3. Move accordingly.
Your body was designed to move. Walk. Stretch. Lift. Work. Play. Move your lymph. Build strength. Don’t confuse movement with punishment. Movement is part of stewardship.
4. Sleep accordingly.
Rest isn’t laziness. Your body uses sleep to repair, regulate, restore, and reset. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your body is give it permission to rest. Allow one day a week to reset from life, mundane routine, and social media.
5. Manage your stress.
Your body responds to what your mind and nervous system experience. Constant stress can take a toll. Create space to breathe, pray, be still, get outside, laugh, and disconnect from the things that keep your body in a constant state of alert. Revisit closed places in your heart that God wants to open and heal from.
6. Eliminate accordingly.
Your body has natural systems for elimination. Support them with adequate hydration, fiber, movement, nourishing foods, and regular bowel function. Don’t constantly bombard your body with things it then has to work harder to process out. This goes for past trauma and hurts too.
7. Listen to your body.
Symptoms are not always the enemy. Sometimes they’re information. Instead of immediately asking, “How do I make this go away?”
Ask, “What is my body trying to tell me with this symptom or pain?”
Stewardship doesn’t mean ignoring illness or refusing medical care. It means taking responsibility for the things you can influence while seeking appropriate help for the things you cannot. God is your source. He is your Healer.
You don’t have to wage war against your body.
Learn to hear and steward it.
