Could tPBM target multiple facets of Neurodevelopment in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Presented by at the Conference
Treatments targeting some dimensions of ASD include:
Pharmacological treatments like Aripiprazole and Risperidone target irritability
Behavioral treatments like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) target cognitive function, language skills, and communication skills
Educational treatments like Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) benefit in perceptual, motor, verbal, and cognitive skills
But could PBM (as neuromodulation) affect more dimensions?
There is mitochondrial dysfunction in ASD, which leads to exacerbated production of reactive oxygen species, microglia activation, astrocyte activation, and concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines. But near-Infrared light can pe*****te the cell and energize the mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell - leading to cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and antioxidant effects.
From the anecdotal evidence of children with ASD, photobiomodulation improved the score in social responsiveness, decreased the score in childhood autism, decreased cognitive and behavioral rigidity, reduced the score of inattention, reduced parental stress, and improved sleep quality
