An accommodation written into an IEP isn't helpful if it only exists on paper.

Families can ask questions such as:

How is this accommodation being provided?

When is it being used?

Is it helping my child access instruction?

An IEP is meant to guide the student's actual educational program — not simply be paperwork completed once a year.

Stay involved. Ask questions. Be part of the team. 💙

Down syndrome occurs when a person has an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21.

But a chromosome doesn't tell you everything about a person.

It doesn't tell you what makes them laugh.

What they love.

Who their friends are.

What they will accomplish.

Or who they will become. 💙💛

Inclusion matters in classrooms.

But it also matters on playgrounds, sports teams, at birthday parties, in churches, workplaces, neighborhoods and friendships.

Our goal isn't simply for individuals with Down syndrome to be present in their communities.

We want them to be known, valued and included. 💙❤️

Special education is a service, not simply a place.

Students with disabilities are general education students first.

Supports and services should help students access their education alongside their peers to the greatest extent appropriate for that individual student.

High expectations + appropriate support can open doors. 💙

It means looking at what someone can do and figuring out the supports they need to be successful.
