Tonight while cooking dinner, I was reminded of something pretty special.
If you know KK, you know she holds a very important position in our house: Official Kitchen Supervisor.
She is almost always right there watching while we cook. And while I try to involve her in the actual cooking process when I can, there’s another part I realized I don’t challenge her with nearly enough putting everything back when we’re finished.
So tonight, after making mashed potatoes, I challenged KK a little.
“Put the milk back.”
Done.
“Put the butter back.”
Done.
Then I started handing her the seasonings…and I was honestly impressed. She knew exactly where each one belonged. No pointing. No gesturing. No showing her where to go.
She just knew.
When we finished with the hand mixer, she knew exactly where that belonged too.
And it hit me: she’s been learning all along just by watching.
As much as I try to challenge KK, I’m guilty of the same thing I think a lot of us parents are guilty of…we sometimes forget to give our kids the opportunity to show us what they already know.
They are watching.
They are learning.
And sometimes there’s a skill sitting there that we didn’t even realize they had because we’ve simply never asked them to do it.
So here’s my little Sunday challenge: Ask your child to do something tonight that you normally do for them.
Maybe tonight isn’t their night to shine. Maybe they need some help and that’s okay.
Or maybe you’ll discover an unsung skill you had no idea was there.
Tonight, I discovered a few.
Proud of you, KK!!! Now enjoy that fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans, you supervised so well. 😂
