was amazing! So many great presentations and so many amazing people. 150+ spellers and 600+ attendees in the most welcoming, non-judgmental space. There were so many people I wish I could have spent more time with or remembered to take pictures with but it is always a whirlwind. I love that these smiles hide the fact that I was sick all weekend but nothing could keep me away.

When we see inconsistent communication or motor actions and abilities, it's easy to assume inconsistent thinking, task avoidance, or behaviors.

But neuroscience suggests another possibility.

Dr. Elizabeth Torres' research has shown that autistic individuals can demonstrate increased motor variability and a higher noise-to-signal ratio in their movements. Rather than dismissing these fluctuations as meaningless "noise," her work proposes that they provide important information about how the nervous system is functioning.

Think of it like trying to listen to a favorite song on a radio station filled with static.

The music is still there.

The signal is simply harder to receive.

Communication and other purposeful motor tasks work in a similar way.

The brain develops an intention to move. That signal travels through networks responsible for sensation, movement, timing, and coordination before reaching the body.

When those signals become inconsistent—or when sensory feedback is unreliable—the body may not execute the intended movement consistently. The result can look like variable pointing and fluctuating accuracy, inconsistent task abilities, unreliable speech, difficulty with multi-step tasks, extra movements, and difficulty with initiation, continuation, or inhibition.

These fluctuations are not evidence that thoughts or understanding are changing. They reflect differences in motor access.

This perspective reminds us to shift our focus away from judging performance and toward supporting access.

Rather than asking, "Do they know?"

We can begin asking,

"What support does the motor system need today?"

That shift changes everything.

✨ The signal may be noisy.

✨ The thoughts are not.
