Happy Global Running Day! What has becoming a runner done for your life?

30 years ago I was just a freshmen in High School feeling lost and like I didn’t belong anywhere. I joined the track team thinking I’d be a Pole Vaulter or Javelin thrower and the head coach immediately said “Distance Runner” and so began the next 30 years of my life in that moment.

I didn’t love running at first but I grew to love it. I grew to love the sport, the teammates, the people I met. Even when I took 8 years off after college I still followed running and it never left my identity.

Running has helped me find my sense of belonging in this world, my wife, my kids, so many friends, a job now. It’s given me such purpose, and confidence in myself all because I showed up one day in high school looking for a place that I could fit in.

Even as someone with ADHD as a child running helped calm my mind and helped me focus better in school.

The PR’s are great and I’ll always remember them but running and the running community gave me purpose and helped me navigate this world as a confused and lost teenager and it still is there for me today as a 44 year old.

Happy Global running day to all of you and remember all the amazing things running has helped give you in your life. It’s an incredible sport.

A phrase I have said to athletes, friends and other runners more than any other.

It can so often feel like this number, is what is defining us. It’s what other people see us as. That no matter how hard we work or how many runs we do, this number is who we are.

But it’s just a pace, it’s just a number and it holds no more meaning than we give us. Yet we all use it in conversation to say “I’m not as fast as you, I run X pace” or that I’m not a real runner until I run Y pace.

We are putting this pace on a pedestal as something that we need to achieve to feel worthy, to feel like we belong.

But it’s the single thing holding you back and sucking your joy from this sport. If you run you are a runner regardless of your pace. Don’t let the numbers we chase define us. They are just goals we set to test our boundaries. To chase our limits.

Our worth is defined by who show up as everyday. By our consistency, our hard work and most of all the fun we have chasing our potential.

No matter what you do you can never guarantee any result or pace, but you can guarantee your effort and how you will show up. Lead with that and that will always be your worth, not some number on a clock.

Cutback or Down Weeks might just be the thing your training blocks are missing.

You can’t build forever, you can’t just keep increasing training volume until race day. You need to strategically build in these cutback/down weeks so you can continue to push.

These weeks can feel like they aren’t helping you reach your goals but on the contrary they are the weeks when you body can absorb all the hard training and then prepare for the next block of training.

When you are strategic about down weeks you can build them in so they happen during stressful life weeks you know ahead of time, or vacations, basically anytime when you know you might have other priorities. They also allow you to work harder and purposefully in the weeks between down weeks because you will have a lighter week to recover a little bit.

Don’t look at down weeks/cutback weeks negatively. Look at them as a tool to help you gain more fitness, stay healthy and fresher and make it to race day so you can crush your goals.

If you are looking for any help most of our coaches are accepting athletes currently and are skilled at building in down weeks and all of our Training Plans come with down weeks built into the plan!

We’ve all been there, your run felt harder than expected, maybe slower than last week, or just a complete slog. And suddenly, your mind starts racing: is my fitness slipping? Am I failing?

Here’s a reality check: Not every run needs to be a statement. Not every workout need to mean something monumental. If we let every run shake out confidence we’re missing the big picture. The best athletes don’t let one game make them second guess their entire careers.

The truth? Growth isn’t linear. There are dips and setbacks and yes tough days. But they are all part of the process. It’s in those moments we grow the most and learn to adapt and adjust to built the resilience to keep going.

If you struggling with any of this you don’t have to go at it alone. At Running Explained we can help you build confidence and embrace your journey and more than just your pace.

So hit me up and let’s connect and if you are looking for some 1:1 coaching support or training plans or even a coaching consult call hit the link in the bio and get started working with us today!
