Oftentimes I hear stories of people settling for a birth experience that they didn’t really want, all because of fear. 2 Timothy tells us that God didn’t give us a SPIRIT of fear, but He did give us one of power, love and a sound mind. I want you to know that you can have the homebirth if you put your faith in God and do the prep-work necessary.

If you’re on the fence for any reason, now’s the time to gain clarity. Send a DM so we can chat more.

It’s all fun and games!! Until you have one person in the couple that’s a little bit more competitive. Lol 😆

Notice how things progress. Mama went from “awww” to “what the heck?” real quick! She prayed about the birth, but I think she forgot to put in a prayer request for breastfeeding. Lol… 😝

All jokes aside, this family is very special to DeShaun Taylor, LM, CPM, MA-MCHS and I. We call them family. We laugh together, cry together, pray together, eat together, go to church together and honestly, we’re going to be sad to see them go. But for now, we’re enjoying our time with them. This is midwifery care.

Labor prep is essential. Knowing what to do and what to expect can positively impact a woman’s birthing experience whether you’re birthing at home, a hospital or in a birthing center. During my prenatal visits with clients, I’m very intentional about educating my clients with knowledge and hands-on skills to take with them into the birthing space. This leaves the dads feeling equipped and confident while the mother feels supported.

If you’re looking for a Doula in the Houston area, let’s connect. 🤎

Actually, this was more of a midwifery student recap. Nevertheless, it’s birthwork related. This week was actually kind of chill. (🗣️Gloryyyyy) With the exception of having to support a patient in the hospital for preterm labor. (Not pictured)

A highlight was attending a talk on Advanced Genetic Screening at The Shire Midwifery with some local midwives. Oh and seeing the first baby that ever made me ugly cry! Jesus! I was so happy to see and hold her. She’s so beautiful and just so special to us.

I’m thinking I might wanna keep these going. Should I?

Everybody doesn’t get to do what they love. I thank God, I get to love on people for a living. My clients become my family. We are sisters and brothers in Christ. This work will always be bigger than birth. Being called to this work by the One True Living God means I get to model Christ-likeness to everyone I encounter. So grateful. 💚

One of the misconceptions about the NICU is that it’s intended for babies born prematurely. While premies are commonly seen in the NICU, they aren’t the only warriors in their fighting. Sometimes babies are born with respiratory complications, congenital conditions such as heart defects, low blood sugar, abnormal blood flow, swelling or infections that could cause them to need continuous monitoring and even intervention.

Hearing that a baby has to go to the NICU after just being born can be scary. It’s never a part of any parent’s birth plan. However, we are so thankful that the NICU is there when we need it.

If you’re pregnant or planning to be, don’t fear. Becoming knowledgeable is the first step toward preparation. Research NICU’s in your area and find out what options are available to help you stay as close to your immediate postpartum plan as possible.

Did you plan to have that uninterrupted Golden Hour? What does physical contact with the baby look like? Physical contact in many cases can greatly benefit the baby. If you plan to exclusively breastfeed, are there resources to help with that? What about counseling services and other tangible supports in your area?

You may want to discuss this now with your Midwife or Doctor for peace of mind. has plenty of information. If you’re local to the Houston area, March of Dimes Houston.

If you have experience as a NICU nurse or NICU parent, leave a pearl of wisdom below. We want our community to be a great source of information for eachother.

Almost 1 in every 10 babies are born prematurely or will have needs that will require them to spend time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This time can be an extremely tumultuous for everyone involved, especially the parents. That’s why NICU Awareness Month is so important.

September is a month to raise awareness for babies in the NICU and shed light on their fight and the resources and programs available to provide support. Organizations like March of Dimes Houston (March of Dimes) provide education and resources to NICU families while also spearheading research to help lessen the number of preterm births.

As birthworkers, it’s important that we become educated about NICU care and share that same education with the families we serve. This month, let’s gather resources and find ways to pull together as a community for our families. If there are any events happening in your area, share and attend. Grassroots organization and mobilization will always be relevant.

If you have a NICU story, share it with us in the comments. Want to show love for someone you know who has a NICU story, no matter the outcome, place a 💚 in the chat. Green is the color for NICU awareness.
