Emerging research suggests that light exposure throughout the entire day matters. The goal may be less about a specific morning "window" and more about creating a strong contrast between bright days and dark nights, while keeping your light-dark patterns consistent from day to day.

Orange foods offer more than vibrant color.

Certain orange foods contain beta-cryptoxanthin, a carotenoid found in foods like tangerines, mandarins, papaya, persimmon, pumpkin, and winter squash.

Emerging research has explored beta-cryptoxanthin in relation to ovarian tissues, reproductive aging, bone health measures, body composition, and mood-related outcomes.

One of the most fascinating aspects of nutrition is that plants communicate through color. The pigments that create the orange hues in foods are not just visual signals. They are biologically active compounds that interact with the body in complex ways.

While research continues to evolve, this body of work reminds us of a simple principle: eating a diversity of colorful plant foods may help increase exposure to a wide range of phytonutrients.

Yesterday at the Annual International Conference (AIC), I shared a framework I’ve been developing called the Endocrine Timeline: a way of viewing a woman’s health journey through the lens of endocrine adaptation across the lifespan.

In Functional Medicine, we’re familiar with using the timeline to identify key events that shape health. I believe this same approach can be especially valuable in women’s health, helping us understand a woman’s “total endocrine load,” the cumulative effects of nutrition, stress, environmental exposures, circadian disruption, reproductive milestones, relationships, and life experiences across the decades.

One of the things I love most about the Endocrine Timeline is its practicality. It can be used as a workshop tool, allowing women to map their own endocrine story and identify patterns they may never have connected before. It can also be used in a one-on-one client encounter, creating a visual framework for understanding how past experiences may be influencing present symptoms.

For women navigating perimenopause, this perspective can be particularly illuminating. Rather than viewing symptoms as isolated events or simply the result of changing hormone levels, we can explore them within the context of a lifetime of endocrine signaling, adaptation, and resilience.

When women see their health story laid out across time, they often gain something more than information. They gain insight, self-compassion, and a deeper appreciation for the wisdom of their bodies.

I never thought I’d be delivering a presentation to my functional medicine colleagues at Annual International Conference where I could bring in ALL of my professional and personal interests, but it happened TODAY!

Black pepper does more than add flavor. 🌿 Its key compound, piperine, may help enhance the absorption of carotenoids like lycopene and beta-carotene, especially when combined with healthy fats.

Even small culinary amounts of black pepper may help support carotenoid absorption. That said, piperine can also influence how the body processes certain medications by affecting liver enzymes and intestinal transporters. Individuals taking medications, especially those with a narrow therapeutic range, should use caution with high-dose piperine supplements and discuss use with their healthcare practitioner.

How we prepare herbs and spices matters. 🌿✨

Gentle cooking methods like simmering, stewing, and microwaving may actually help release beneficial antioxidant compounds from herbs and spices such as cinnamon, ginger, rosemary, thyme, and cloves. In contrast, high-heat methods like grilling, frying, and dry heating may reduce some of these protective plant compounds.

Even cooking time appears to influence the antioxidant and polyphenol content of spices and herbs, reminding us that preparation is part of the nutrition story too. 🍲
